“Great Shakespeare at a Killer Price”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

Last night, on the recommendation of our daughter in law, my lovely wife and I saw the Tempest at the Artists Repertory Theater. Neither of us are Shakespeare aficionados, so we approached the evening with a modicum of trepidation. Not to worry. The production was amusing and extremely well performed. The talent of the actors was amazing. As entertainment goes in the new millennium, the tickets were reasonably priced. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this sort of thing.

We parked on the street with out difficulty. (The theater is quite near Civic Stadium…or whatever they're calling it this week. As long as there isn't a soccer match, parking should be a breeze.) Plenty of dining options are available nearby.

As an interesting sidelight, the theater sold a variety of beer, wine and cookies which one was permitted to take into the performance. I personally would worry about falling asleep and drooling on the shoulder of the person sitting next to me. However, a surprising number of patrons took advantage to sip an IPA while imbibing the bard.

“Portland Theater at it's best”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

-Thought provoking themes
-Provocative writing
-Smart and funny
-Intimate seating

This is Portland theater at it's best.

After attending a few shows last year my husband and I purchased 2013-2014 season tickets and so far have been more then pleased with the plays presented. But even more so with the customer service when we have need to change our ticket dates.
- No hassles, no additional charges, no void/scan of old tickets to e-mail, pick up at will call, any date as long as there are tickets available and as close to our original seats as available.
Extra bonus with season tickets: Free parking in the theater's garage/parking lot which is a big bonus for that area of town. We have yet to go on a night there is a game at the park, but hoping the garage will help with that. The theater building itself is wonderfully modern with 2 bars, very nice lounge seating for before and during intermission. Reasonably priced drinks/snacks and you can bring your drinks into the theater to enjoy during the performance. So no gulping down your beer/wine when the lights blink. Some Friday nights they have karaoke from about 6-6:30 until just before show time. They also have rotating gallery exhibits that are somewhat related to the play themes in the upstairs lobby/lounge area.

“Great plays in an intimate setting - discounts for preview audiences”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

WE have the season pass to all plays in the preview package. We get to see all the plays the day before they officially start. These are not stop and go performances, but fully staged productions. Twice we have been in the same row as the director, once with the production manager reviewing the show before premiere. Even got to make suggestions during intermission or at the end! You can change performances if necessary. Going to full regular scheduled productions will cost a little more. We have seen a number of world premieres and even two plays with Oscar winner William Hurt. Also, if you get the season package, you get a free parking voucher good for each show and a major discount! Plus, as you keep the subscription longer, you can improve your seating at no additional charge. We love where we are now at!

“Artists Repertory Theatre”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

I have attended several programs at ART over many years. Generally they are quite good and well produced. The current show, Xmas Unplugged, is a sad exception. It is two, one-act plays and the first was so poor that I did not remain for the second. The actors were unable to speak loudly enough to be heard in the relatively small theatre. When they did speak it was to utter profanity that seemed to be purely for the sake of being profane. The play was very disappointing. If the tickets did not clearly state:"No Refunds," I would have asked for my money to be returned.

“Great regional theater”

These guys are the Avis of Pacific Northwest theater--not the first, but trying harder. Inventive shows with strong repertory and visiting artists. Looking forward to the 2013-2014 season.
