My husband and I just spent our first day at the races with a couple of really good friends. Overall I'd say we all had a positive experience. We spent our time upstairs in the Turf Club, where they advertise the buffet. We were all disapointed in the buffet based on quality, selection and price combined. If we were to do it again, we would skip the buffet and the Turf Club area all together. A good time can be had in the lower levels with the other food offerings, seating and viewing. Afterall, we were there to play the ponies and drink beer. The laid back atmosphere was an added bonus that helped make for a great day. Kudos to the staff for the friendly faces and helpfulness.

This was my first visit to Portland Meadows and my first time betting on race horses. Our friend purchased a groupon coupon for four which included a racing program, $30 in food credit, and a souvenir jockey boot glass with a beverage of your choice.

Portland Meadows is enclosed but you are able to go outside if you wish. Everyone who worked there we encountered was very helpful and friendly. They have several options of food downstairs (burgers, sandwiches, etc.) or you could go upstairs to the Turf Club for their buffet ($25 per person). We choose to do the buffet option, but overall, the buffet was okay. Our group would probably pass on it in the future and eat at one of the food areas downstairs.

$2 is the minimum to bet on a horse. It is a not so expensive way to learn about horse racing and you do not have to bet on a horse each race. The ticket clerk was very helpful if we had any questions. The racing program also has a good layout for explaining how to read the program especially for beginners.

It was a very fun day and our group is planning on returning again.
