“Pleasant Surprise!”
Reviewed October 1, 2013 via mobile

The sushi and rolls were very good. We ordered from both the Happy Hour menu and regular menu. Menu provides interesting material on sushi etiquette and the servers were quick to provide suggestions. Finished our meal with the Sea Urchin Creme Brûlée and although the creme brûlée didn't sit long enough and it was slightly runny it was still pretty darn good and quite creative!

“Superb Sushi in Northwest But a Bothersome Staff”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

My friend and I enjoyed a lovely meal of top rate sushi dishes tonight at Bamboo Sushi on NW 23rd in Portland. We sat outside and were greeted quickly by our pierced and tattooed server who brought an edamame appetizer to share. (Actually, every server we had was pierced and tattooed). The menu is extensive, and the restaurant prides itself on being green and sustainable - even to the point of not having "to-go" cups for tea. Menu items are color coded as to sustainability and sourcing, and include a variety of sashimi, sushi, and seafood and Wagyu beef entrees - this isn't just a sushi bar! The clientele is hip and young, and the prices, probably due to the cost of sourcing local and sustainable foods, were about 20% higher than what you'd find at a similar establishment. We ordered a Chasing the Dragon roll, Spider handroll, poke salad, spicy tuna roll, and another roll with salmon, crab, avocado and cream cheese that I can't recall the name. Everything was fresh and superb and beautifully plated and arrived quickly, with the hot dishes hot and very tasty. The spicy tuna is very spicy, so beware if you like your tuna on the mild side.

Service was really the only down side to the entire meal, as we were interrupted every few minutes (I'm not exaggerating) by a wait person (not our server) asking if they could clear our plates. After the 7th or 8th time someone asked us, we finally told them to let us enjoy our meal and to clear our plates after we left. That didn't seem to register as different folks came by, again asking to clear our plates. I'm sure they were trying to be efficient and conscientious, but it was so annoying it ruined what otherwise could have been a 5-star rating. The restaurant was half full on a Thursday night, so it's not like they needed to wash dishes. My guess is the waiters were bored and trying to find something to do, and didn't know they were repeating the behavior of their fellow servers. Our main server seemed a bit off as she forgot our tea and also mistakenly brought a different roll than we had ordered. To her credit she apologized, told us we wouldn't be charged for the extra roll and the tea, and quickly brought the correct dish.

All in all, we would return, as the food was delicious and the sustainability efforts commendable.

“Great Sushi”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Pros: everything we got was fresh and tasty, had some very interesting dishes I have not had before. Good choices of interesting drinks and beer. Cons: took us almost an hour to get seated, never seen a restaurant with so little tables available for parties of 3+, other parties of 2 arrived half an hour after us and was seated quickly. by the time we put our order in, most popular items were sold out.

“Excellent sushi in Portland”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

We are always on the lookout for good sushi in Portland and many had recommended Bamboo. We decided on the 21st Avenue one in NW vs. the one in SE. We were seated right away in what looks like a pretty new space. Bar and high tables near the front, regular tables in the middle and a sushi bar in the back. We sat at the front, high tables. We were served by one of the bartenders, which could be a problem when it gets busy, but it wan't this early. They had some interesting happy hour menu items and a lot of specialty drinks We ordered a couple of the Rainbow roll and one of the flank steak appetizers. Both were delicious. We also had an odd choice of a pork belly happy hour dish that was amazing. The sushi here is excellent, but it does seem to be geared a bit towards the spicy side. Jalepeno and chilis along with spicy tuna choices. We aren't huge fans of the super spicy foods, feeling that a good, flavorful food doesn't need to set you on fire.. We will definitely be back here for another round.

“Portland's Best Tasting, But Highest Priced Sushi”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

We dropped in on a busy Friday night and immediately decided to sit at the bar to avoid the 45 minute wait for a table. The bartenders are extremely friendly and know how to sell you a delicious cocktail.

The salted edemame comes out at about the same time as the mint mojitos. If there was as much liquid as there was ice, I might only need one. After deciding on the sashimi and a couple of the house specialty rolls, we placed our order. It only seemed to take about 10 minutes before we had everything in front of us.

The food was absolutely amazing. If I had to describe the meal in one word, I would say "fresh". The only drawback to the evening was the size of the portions. We had to place three orders to fill ourselves, which was well reflected in the bill. If you think you only need a California roll, you had better order three of them.

Four cocktails + dinner + tip = $145.00. Ouch!
