We went in for lunch on a sunny Sunday and ate out on the back patio. We tried the gluten free beer battered cod and the regular cod fish and chips. I like the beer battered the best. Both were delicious. We also tried the tuna melt on a really good gluten free bread and sweet potato fries. We loved everything and enjoyed Grover the cat who was hanging out on the back patio with us.

This greasy spoon has all the making of a place where one could expect great Fish and Chips. However, if falls short and is overpriced. $21 for 8 oz of sub par Halibut in this setting is ridiculous. In fairness, the $3.95 Happy Hour clams and chips were a value but this isn't even close to being "Portland's Best Fish and Chips".

My daugther has Celiac disease and we find ourselves attending medical appointments in Portland from time to time. We ALWAYS hit the Hawthorne Fish House. The staff are great. Tasty cod and halibut but my fave is the catfish. Delicious gluten free desserts. They like the Green Bay Packers there and usually have a game on of some sort. Very relaxing, fun atmosphere, pub-like.

First, I'm a bit of a fish and chips snob...so temper my review with this knowledge. This fish house on Hawthorne offers a big selection of fish - cod, halibut, salmon, and more, as well as salads and sandwiches. Pricing is reasonable for the quality and quantity. The jalapeno tartar sauce is delicious. They use a light rice flour for the fish and it is light and delicious. It comes with a big pile of a chips (a bit neglected, compared to the fish). So despite my average rating, I'd likely go back.

There is a nice outdoor patio - key for those rare times that the sun shines - and plenty of seating inside. The decor and service are just okay.

We were disappointed with our meal of Cod Fish and Chips. Maybe it's their use of a different oil than we're used to, but the fish and cheese curds were both greasy. The fries (chips) were nothing special either. We will probably not return.
