We took a tour -- back roads wine tours -- and loved the wine, the scenery...barely touched the surface.

Within a 45 minute drive from downtown, the wine region spreads out. Many small wineries with lovely views and un-commercialized properties. The tasting room staffs are informative and helpful, making only a few stops an excellent learning experience. They are not hesitant to recommend some of their favorite other wineries. We stopped at Patton Valley and Elk Cove before lunch in Carlton and Penner-Ash after. Great variety and pride in their wines.

After many miles of suburban sprawl, finally hitting the fields of fruit orchards, farms and vineyards was such a relief. The views from any of the wineries in the hills are breathtaking- Mts. Hood and Jefferson to the east, the Coastal Hills to the west, the river winding its way through fields and vineyards. It was like stepping into a slower time and place. It was very hard to leave it to retrace our path along 99E through the miles of malls back to Portland.

We have been to Sonoma, Stellenbosch, Montalcino... etc but this is hands down my favourite wine region so far. We were mostly greeted by the wine-maker and not the sales person with limited information. I drank some of the best wine I have ever tasted with some incredibly passionate wine makers. I have no idea why Willamette is only number 3 on the list!

We had a great wine tasting session with Patt. Enjoyed the view of the vineyard and the lovely wine tasting area. The wines of this vineyard are extraordinary. We learned about their Pinot Noir's, Pinot Gris and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
