“Neighborhood pub with A+ beer and meals!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

Breakside is our favorite local restaurant - we are lucky to live so close to a pub that provides gourmet beer and food for neighborhood hang-out prices! Their unique selection of regular and seasonal brews keeps us coming back. Try my favorite, the Aztec for a delicious surprise with chocolate and habanero! They have a solid selection of recurring delicious entrees which go above and beyond the usual pub fare. Sure you can always order a burger, but give the omnivore mac and cheese a try with gourmet cheeses and sausage plus garden vegetables in a HUGE bowl large enough to share. I also enjoy the blackened chicken burger and the cooked-to-order lambwich is my standard go-to for comfort food.

Additionally, the staff is incredibly friendly and warm. We are always welcomed like friends, and often we don't even have to order our "usual" drinks before they are presented to the table.

The restaurant is nicely laid out with a more "bar-friendly" section with clear view of the (muted) televisions for sports events, but also a separate standard seating area which offers a bit of a more "restaurant" vibe.

Definitely check it out!

“Great cold beer--bad cold service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2013

We were there on January 5th and just stopped in (4 of us) for a beer. Although the server seated us in the bar area, she seemed totally put out, perhaps because we weren't ordering food. The beer was incredibly good, but it was hard to enjoy it when our server was so totally rude. We were in and out of there quickly, which I'm sure suited her just fine.

“Fantastic beer selection, and excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012

Breakside was recommended to as a place that combined great food and great beer, and the recommendation was spot on. This place is only a short drive from I-5 in NE Portland, and we visited on a grey November afternoon. Parking is a little tight, but we were able to park a block away. Despite the gloomy weather, the outside of the brewery looks nice, with large outside tables that we look forward to trying in the summer. Inside is split into two areas, with the bar and a few small tables to the right, and an upstairs dining area with some large booths and larger tables, plus the kitchen. The kitchen is small, and they do state on their menu that during busy periods it may take a while for food to arrive. Our food didn't take long to arrive, and it was excellent.

But let's start with the beers. They do a standard taster with their four year-round beers (Woodlawn Pale, IPA, Aztec and Dry Stout) and any two from their seasonal taps. I chose the Imperial Stout and New Nordic Porter, and they threw in a smaller taster of the Session Brown when I mentioned that it had caught my eye. All of the beers were excellent, especially the Aztec (an ale with cocoa, and serrano and habenero chiles) and the New Nordic Porter (with plums, dill, fennel and caraway). After working through the sampler, I also tried the Coconut Pumpkin Stout and Oude Noire, which were also very good.

The food was also excellent. I had the veggie version of the cheeseburger, and my wife has the veggie wrap. The burger was moist and nicely spiced, and the waffle fries were very tasty. The wrap was overflowing with tasty veggies, which worked well with the feta crumbles and vinaigrette.

This place was a great find, and we will be returning in a few weeks to try the Dunkelweizen that they are currently fermenting.

The best thing was the price - two entrees, the six beer sampler and two extra beers came to only $35.

“Great food and drink options”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

Was looking for a local gastropub and the Breakside Brewery was well off the beaten path but was a good stop to watch the game and grab a sandwich. They had a draft called Aztec which was a Habenero and Ancho chili infused beer. Definitely had a bite too it but in a good way.

“Unusually good beer in a city of unusually good beer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

Some of the better ale in a city of great beers and ale, Breakside does the Northwest tradition proud. It's in a pleasant old tree-lined residential area in Northeast, worth the trek for us to come in from far Northwest, with sidewalk tables (with plenty of bike parking), bar and upstairs balcony dining areas. It is often pretty busy; food and service are reliably at least pretty good, and sometimes exceptionally so. Some specialties: sweet potato waffle fries; deep fried pickles; curry fried chicken; pork sandwich; good burgers (though they tend to the rare side). I would wish for a little more range in the menu - more good veggie options, for example (though the green mac and cheese is pretty good), but not bad for pub food. My mom wishes they had more really light beer options - no bud light here, and the hoppy NW flavor is too much for her - so she gets ice to dilute her wit a bit.
