What a combination...bourbon and coffee! But it wasn't a drink, it was ice cream! Salt and Straw in the Nob Hill/Uptown area of Portland, OR is the place to get this unusual ice cream combination. The ice cream flavors change often but today there were 2 bourbon combos available...bourbon/coffee and bourbon/pecan pie. I asked for both in a waffle cone and it was worth it. The waffle cone was just made (still warm) and the scoops were sizable. I will definitely visit this corner ice cream shop again!

I gotta be honest, this place has good ice cream, but it is way over-priced. People are only drawn to it because there is always a line outside the door, which is only because there is literally no room to walk/wait inside. What really makes "the best ice cream?" I cannot say, but Salt and Straw tries too hard with their flavors and, as in the case of the balsamic strawberry, fail to make the flavor advertised come through. The balsamic strawberry just tastes like strawberry. If you want better and more appropriately priced ice cream, go to Scoop who uses the same local dairy farm and has a much less pretentious atmosphere.

If you're looking for standard ice cream fare, then this is not the place. It is creative. Ice cream is extra rich and some flavors can be salty. The servers are really nice and it is very helpful to be able to get the sample tastes of different flavors since they are quite a bit off the beaten path. It's hard to rate, bcs it's excellent in creativity or as a different experience. How good the ice cream is depends on what you like. But it's not exactly comfort food ice cream either. Fun for an occasional experience or if you have a guest who wants a different ice cream experience.

INCREDIBLE icecream... so good, all locally made and they have tasty seasonal flavors so there is always something new! The sea salt and carmel was to die for and the pppermint hot cocoa was also really tasty with little crunchy bits in it. I will go out of my way to go back :)

Back home in Western Colorado, we two vacationeers have a selection of one ice cream place -- Dairy Queen. At my brother's recommendation, went to Salt and Straw. The flavors blew our minds. I love salt and caramel, could have eaten a quart of Salted Caramel. This is rich, top drawer ice cream that comes in amazingly creative flavors. Not everyday ice cream (one would go broke!) but well worth the wait.
