Decided to try eating here after seeing on groupon and was very happy. The purple rice is pretty cool and the service was great. Would have love to have had some beer on tap but other than that it had all you need for a great night out for sushi.

Have been here many times and it provides consistently good sushi, but they raised their prices recently. While I haven't tried any of the non sushi food (aside from the unspectacular miso and edamame), everything has always been of a good quality. Service varies but is usually decent. Close to NW 23rd and usually good people watching from near the window.

This Japanese Restaurant is beautifully decorated. The food is worth driving in the NW district, and they do have some parking of their own, which is a nice addition for this area. But if there is one down fall, it's the service. The restaurant by no means was full. So I'm not sure why it was so slow. Now if there were a few of us and we were socializing it might not had bothered us so much. But we wait 15 minutes for them to take our order and I think that is to long.

I was surprised to see how busy Wild Wasabe was on a Sunday evening. So different from when the building housed Umenoke. It's no longer the quiet neighborhood Japanese bistro it once was. The remodel really polished the place up. Nice. Now the food. First, the menu is mainly hybrid sushi, with interesting looking combinations of fish, rice and vegetables, much as i've been seeing at competing sushi bars around Portland. Prices range from $3-$6 for traditional nigiri (piece of fish on top of a mound of rice), and $7-$10 for fancified rolls. Sushi quality? Good. Inventive. Great if you like non-traditional artsy presentation.

The other food on the menu doesn't stand up as well. The portions are large but preparation and taste are like an afterthought. The restauant owner clearly does't think you will--or should--bother going beyond the sushi menu. Teriaki chicken was boring. It lacked a great sauce and the meat itself was characterless. The rice was flat tasting. Miso soup was thin and closer to lukewarm dishwater than an interesting broth. We tried the tempura and that was very good: Crispy and not overcooked. The other dish on the table was tempura udon soup. That was the best non-sushi dish for my money. Solid, chewy noodles, a decent broth, and good tempura shrimp. Not exciting but flavorful, with plenty of noodles.

I might go back for sushi but i'll be sure not to bring non-sushi lovers along, because the friends I was with all decided there was nothing much of interest there for them.

The spicy tuna rolls are yum. But there are much more satisfying sushi restaurants in town.
