Stayed here last year when it was known as the Avalon. I know it's a silly detail, but I LOVED the fruit and herb infused water that was always available in the lobby. Also enjoyed having continental breakfast available on our floor every morning. The rooms were very nice. Wished at times that a less expensive, non-valet parking option was available. The gym and spa were very nice too. Location could've been better, but the bike path was a nice feature.

Dear Libbyfunnell,

Thank you for your four star review and mention of your favorite amenities. The very popular infused water is still available in our lobby and in the spa area, stop by and try the delicious water we prepare everyday. You can also use the bikes that we have available for your leisure, free of charge.

All the best,
Ana Maret

Decent deal on short notice. Quiet location on river. A bit of an odd hotel.
Makeover kind of works but the property is oddly put together. Plumbing appears
to be a significant building problem. Could hear gurgling in the walls from other rooms,
as if on cue our toilet plugged in morning. Breakfast at adjoining property was fine,
although service was a bit spotty and they didn't seem to have things dialed in well.
Didn't get an opportunity to use spa. Potential here, but problems at present.

Beautiful rooms and property. We parked our car for 3 days and just used to the streetcar to get around downtown and the Pearl District. The staff was very attentive. As far as dining options, the restaurant next door is good, but not great compared to the outstanding cuisine available in the Portland area. There is really nothing else close by, but again the streetcar is very accessible.

We arrived in Portland by train and spent 3 full days getting around the city by streetcar, bus and foot. You don't need a car. The hotel isn't downtown but between the #35 bus and the streetcar it is quite accessible. (We had an enjoyable walk to the 'Hawthorne Bridge'.)

Upon arrival, we were informed that the internet "didn't reach the 5th floor". We were offered an ethernet cable which was pointless since we didn't have a computer with wired capability. Not having internet proved a real problem since we were dependent on public transportation and needed to access websites (like google maps and PDX transit) to determine the possible mass transit options. This ended up being a sufficiently annoying point that we bought a plug to turn the Macbook Air into a wired connection. It was frustrating that we had to track down the Apple store to make an expensive hotel into something usable.

We were told that there was a free breakfast. And that was case except our last day when we walked into the restaurant to see that it was now a "full service" breakfast and no longer free. Granted the menu was more interesting but neither of our dishes were worth the price and we longed for the free oatmeal and free fruit.

Given the price of the hotel, we will probably investigate other options the next time in Portland.

Room Tip: Bring a computer with a wired connection until they get the internet situation cleared up.

I'm a frequent visitor to Portland because of the city's immense beauty and because children and grandchildren are there. When it's a special event like kids' birthdays, etc., the entire out-of-town family descends on Portland necessitating finding hotel rooms reasonably close to the children's home. Therefore, this little gem, nestled in a quiet spot on the Willamette River just a stone's throw from all the freeways and a short ride on the streetcar to the center of bustling downtown Portland, provides a comforting refuge. The rooms are great, especially if you're able to book one on the river front, the daily breakfast is scrumptious, the spa is terrific and the service outstanding and always with a smile. Looking forward to my next visit.

And we are the ones who can not wait until your next visit. You are absolutely right, we are so close to everything and yet away from the downtown hustle and bustle. When is the next family gathering? I would love to assist you with your reservations arrangements.

I agree with positive comments made by other people posting about this hotel - great staff, nice rooms and bathrooms, green awareness, spa, fitness facility and restaurant. Nice and quiet! Loved having the bikes to ride. Close to downtown (22-minute tram ride two short blocks away) and obviously a developing area, with new businesses going in. By the time we stay there again, there will be more choices (although I sure did enjoy Little Big Burgers veggie burger and fries!). The restaurant is lovely and the included continental breakfast exceeded expectations.
One quibble: did not get *hot* water during our stay. Water was hot enough for a shower at full hot setting, but definitely not for a bath, which was disappointing.
Spa was fantastic, and Lily was a treat.

Room Tip: I wouldn't bother paying extra for a river view room. There are trees in the way, and the hotel...

I recently had the pleasure of staying once again in my favorite Portland Hotel...River's Edge. Very comfortable, great staff, attention to details... such as bagged ice, robes, water at the desk, even bikes to ride in the summer months! I look forward to just spending a weekend at the hotel on my next trip and not going any where. There is a great restaurant and a spa. The river views are my favorite.
