“A Luxury Hotel Wanna Be”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

This is our second time staying here in a couple of weeks and there are more negative consistencies than positive ones. Arrived this afternoon and went up to our room. It smelled awful -- very musty. Even the bellman agreed. So, back to the lobby we went. No apologies from the front desk. Asked for a higher room, if possible, and curtly told, "We only have rooms available on the 2nd floor." Okay, up we went again. Smell was fine, but no one bothered to mention there would be construction taking place directly above us (or so it sounds). Lots of hammering and drilling for the past hour. Reminded us of our first stay where lots of sounds seem to travel through the air vents.

Hard to believe a hotel that wants to be first class these days would still have the old tube TVs. But I've now been in three rooms here, and there were old TVs in all three.

Perhaps an even bigger frustration came a moment ago when I went to the business center with a thumb drive to print off some documents I needed for tonight. There was only one computer with a USB port and it couldn't print what I needed. The reason is that the software loaded was Microsoft Office 2003! That's right, it was 10 years old!

The riverside location is nice and the bathrooms have nice space, but as others have pointed out, there are very few outlets in the room, by the beds and you have to crawl under the desk to plug in your computer.

I won't be trying again to see if the third time will be a charm.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a flatscreen TV (one person who wrote a comment said he had one) and also ask ab...

Great hotel close to everything but tucked away in a peaceful spot on the river. Read the reviews before going and were prepared for a less than stellar breakfast. Couldn't be more wrong. Breakfast was low key, but homemade granola, varied fresh fruit, hot oatmeal (not instant) and hard boiled egg had everything we needed for a great start to our day. The hotel was super busy the night we were there, but everyone made us feel as important and welcomed as the celebrity guest staying there and the party for 100 at the restaurant that night. Enjoyed the no cost features at the spa, and a walk along the river. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: We booked too late to reserve a river view, but had a nice window overlooking the rooftop garden. Yo...

There were so many reasons to choose this hotel but in the end just wasn't there.

It started on arrival and the fact that all signs had been removed from the exterior of the hotel. Although GPS kept telling us we had arrived, it was impossible to tell. The valet and desk staff were unapologetic at our frustration after a long drive.

The room was a nice size and mostly accommodated the two king sized beds. We would have liked river view but they were not available at the time of reservation or check in..just bad luck, no ones fault.

Bedding was aged and snagged without the typical bolsters, pillows and comforters we're used to seeing these days. The T.V. was still an old CRT. The only place to plug in electronics was by crawling under the desk, for the one available outlet or one on the wall next to the bed in which only one of the two outlets worked.

The bathroom was nice, clean, had good towels and complementary products.

The free wi-fi was a bonus and speed was acceptable for browsing.

The complementary breakfast was abysmal. They should be embarrassed to even try to sell this as an option. It is set up in the lobby of the spa where there are only 3 tables, two of which are tall bistro tables that only seat two people. Food offered included 3 kinds of boxed cereal, oatmeal in a crock pot, and a poor selection of dry muffins.

I didn't mind the isolated location of the hotel (about a mile from downtown) because we wanted a quite weekend. The setting is lovely.

This is an adequate hotel but it's way over priced for the lower quality.

Room Tip: We would have like river view if available..go for it.

Green Features: Because we drove a hybrid car, the valet parking was free. That was a real bonus in a valet only hotel!

My wife and I spent a night here celebrating our anniversary. We had stayed here a number of years ago when it was under different management. The location was great, and we had a great room overlooking the Willamette River. The room was clean and comfortable. Parking is by valet only -- if you happen to drive a hybrid, be sure to mention it as the front desk as parking is free. We had a fairly nice continental breakfast in the morning included with the room, though there was totally inadequate seating for even a small number of guests.

The bad part (and it was a big one for us): We had received an email asking us to complete a preference form. We asked to schedule massages and a restaurant reservation. I will admit that it was my bad for not calling to confirm, but when we arrived, it was apparent that no one had paid any attention to our preference form. There were no available times for massages, and frankly we didn't feel there was much concern about this gross oversight by the front desk staff. Fortunately, the restaurant wasn't overly booked and we were easily able to make our own reservation there.

Other that this, we had a great stay and probably would have given them five stars except for this error. The property is a little out of the way if you don't know Portland, but it's not far from downtown and all that the city has to offer. There's a great walking/biking path along the river right outside your door.

Room Tip: Spring for a river view - well worth it.

Green Features: They seem concerned about recycling and saving water. The free parking for hybrids is a nice touch

Firstly the hotel was superb, good quality great value. The only problem (some may see it as a plus) is the hotels location. The River's Edge Hotel & Spa is located in SW Portland on the banks of the Willamette River. If you are travelling by car Downtown Portland is a few minutes by road. If like us you use other means of transport and are on vacation the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, transport into Portland is via The Portland Streetcar a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel which then takes 20-25 minutes to get into Portland, there are also bus services which can take longer. The alternative is a Cab which again can be expensive. There is also little in the immediate vincinity of the hotel, the nearest bar seemed to be the Macadam Bar and Grill a 15-20 walk away. The plus points about the location were the beautiful Riverside walk and the fact it was fairly quiet.

The hotel itself was excellent, a large well appointed room with bathroom including shower, bath, toilet, a modern large screen TV, free wi-fi, excellent spa facilities and a free continental breakfast and newspapers. My room was a little close to the elevator so we did have a little noise during the night. The Riverside walk was very popular with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers.

An excellent hotel but as the receptionist admiited to me, "the main issue is the location"

Room Tip: Riverside view at the rear

I stayed at this hotel under another management and was fortunate to have a top floor suite that I shared with my daughter. The selling point is definitely the river view although I understand that the full service spa is another benefit. The parking is valet only and the location is difficult to find even with GPS.

This visit, I reserved through Hotwire and was surprised to receive the same hotel at a reasonable price. Knowing the room situation, I emailed ahead of time and requested a riverview king. Unfortunately, when I arrived with my husband I was given a king with an undesirable view. After complaining and stating what I was promised, we finally received a 4th floor river view. The room was ample with the standard facilities of a desk, flat screen TV and sitting area. The bathroom is also large with a separate shower, tub and toilet area. The king bed was comfortable and situated facing the river so we slept with the curtains drawn and the balcony slightly open…..we were awaken by the sunshine through the trees and a serene scenery. Below the balcony was a nice running trail along the river and plenty of greenery. Adjacent to the hotel is a well-situated restaurant also with river views, Aquariva. Breakfast is included and there is the usual array of pastries, coffee, juice, granola, yogurt and fruit. The staff are friendly and the lobby area is quite nice for reading a magazine or networking with fellow travelers.

I would definitely consider another stay at this hotel, especially for the Hotwire rate.

My husband and I stayed for two nights and really enjoyed this place. It's very quiet and peaceful, but still close to everything. The room was spacious, clean and very comfy. The view of the river was really pretty. The staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful.

The only downside was the restaurant, were we had Sunday brunch. The food was okay--not great, and mine arrived lukewarm--but the service was abysmal. It was slow, sloppy and very inattentive. Things we asked for took forever to come, and god help you if you discovered you needed something (more coffee, etc.) between the very infrequent visits by our waiter.

We would definitely go back to the hotel, but we'll eat elsewhere!

Room Tip: You don't see much of the river from the river view rooms, once the leaves are on the trees. We...
