We stayed for just one night, but it was a wonderful time. The restaurant next door was beautiful and the wait staff very friendly. The food was fantastic too!
Our room overlooked the river, and it was large and oh-so comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel!

The Avalon is a boutique hotel on the Willamette River with spacious rooms, a friendly efficient staff and a great fitness center.
The little patio off of the room, overlooking the river, is a nice place to retreat after exploring Portland. The restaurant is convenient and good and the Continental Breakfast set up in the elevator lobby is tasty and attractive with an especially good granola.
The friendly and smiling valet attendant makes you feel that they're really happy to have you.

Room Tip: ask for a river view room with balcony

We agree with all the positive reviews. We had a most romantic, fun experience here, and felt completely spoiled. It's true that the location is a distance from many activities, but for a cozy, romantic experience, it can't be beat. The Avalon Hotel and Spa is our new favorite weekend getaway!

Room Tip: Choose a Riverside room with balcony for sure. We couldn't resist sitting outside in the dead of winter! But even inside, the view is gorgeous and peaceful. Loved!

We stayed here over Christmas weekend. This was our 3rd time here. It is excellent in every way. The spa, the restaurant, room service, staff, accommodations, the whole shebang! We will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Riverside King.....especially during warmer months. The breeze off the river is very refreshing and the view....well, simply wonderful!

some really strong points to this place:
full gym, like you'd have a membership to at home
free use of spa (spa services/treatments are extra obviously)
spacious room - see about getting a river front with outdoor balcony. I was upgraded automatically for some reason.
love the breakfast setup on every floor. so you can pad down the hallway in stocking feet and general state of dishevelment for you morning coffee, fruit, yogurt, etc. without venturing into 'public' areas.
what's not so great - PARKING is a bit dumb. you are either forced to valet or shooed off up the hill to some undisclosed self-park area (read: 'street')
location is OK if you dont know PDX well or if you are there for spa and short stay, but otherwise you'll soon realise you are on that strangely vacant-feeling south waterfront area. In summer, this would be cool-ish since you hop on the riverfront bike path just in back of the hotel and head downtown, but in Portland's other 10 months, you won't like that you have to drive to NW, Pearl, Mississippi, or other parts of town.
overall, good place where you can usually find a decent deal on hotels.com, and great if you want a spa/fitness weekend, but otherwise there are better places in town.

btw, i mark 'business' for all of my reviews when this site forces you to disclose your 'sort of trip'. how 'bout a 'NOYDB' box?

Room Tip: try for river front
