This place has it all. My family really enjoyed our stay here. We had a two bedroom suite with everything we could ever want. There is on-site parking ($20), a great workout room, pool, breakfast, snacks at night and a very comfortable bed. The staff is friendly, helpful and welcoming. It is on the pricey side, but when you consider everything they offer, it can't be beat!

First, it is easy to get to the hotel. We took the train, so we don't know how parking is at the hotel, but from the train it is a breeze; you simply walk a few blocks from Union Station to the streetcar line and ride the streetcar. The stop for the hotel is literally a 1 minute walk from the hotel, so that is a major plus. (You will probably use the streetcar all the time whether on business or leisure. It goes to downtown from the hotel and you can transfer to the MAX light rail from the streetcar.) The hotel is in a great location by the river, near the large riverfront park, and, like I said, the streetcar makes getting anywhere else a breeze.

The booking system was also very satisfactory. We asked for a higher-up room and an early check-in, and that's what we got. We were in our room before 4 pm, and were on the 9th (highest floor), and that was with the cheapest rate we could find, too!

Our unit (a studio) was immaculate, spacious, and highly functional. However, please note that as a mid-level business hotel, it is not the most romantic for decor, but it worked for our purposes. The kitchen would have been nice had we needed it, and I believe that any couple would be able to manage in their studio for quite some time. And the only potential downside about the kitchen is that there was no oven.

Breakfast (we went at 9 AM on a Sunday) was very crowded, but we dealt with it by plopping ourselves down at a large circular table next to strangers. It wasn't so bad, really. Even though it was crowded, the staff did a great job at continually restocking their excellent variety of foods. Best of all, of course, is that it was free!

After checkout, one thing that we didn't like, but forgot to report (oops o_0) was that the security for the bag hold behind the counter isn't what I would like. Someone does have to let you in, but within that room is simply shelves with luggage, so you could really take someone else's stuff if you really wanted to.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel especially to business travellers, families with children, and I suppose couples that aren't looking for the height of romance. We weren't; we were just looking for a quick getaway, so it worked for us, too.

A few more notes: pets are allowed at $10/night, parking is available and seems to be plentiful enough at about $15/night (but hotel very transit accessible from Union Station and PDX), the pool looks good but a little small for a very large hotel, and there are conference rooms aplenty.

Great hotel, and it seems to be that way at all levels of the Marriott chain.

The staff was great, When i walked in to our room , the air did not feel cool enough but the staff called maintenance which adjusted it and we were in business. Nice meal, nice pool, very helpful staff all around. really a delightful stay in a very difficult heat wave.

The staff at this hotel does a PERFECT job of making sure your stay is comfortable. Absolutely incredible staffing! Everywhere is immaculate & decorated in contemporary colors, the breakfast was great, the rooms were designed for comfort... the list goes on. The price of the room was unbelievable considering all the amenities they provided. Sure the location is outside the hub but we found it was easy to get around on foot or by using the hotels free shutte. Plus, being right next to the river, the walk along the river with all the shops & restaurants was fun. I'd return there in a heartbeat & will look for other Residence Inns in the future.

Just got back from spending five nights in Portland at the Residence Inn with another couple. We had a double-suite room (one had a queen bed, one had a king) and a common area with a living room type setup and a full kitchen. If the rooms haven't been remodeled lately I would be surprised (granite countertops, modern furnishings). Maid service was awesome and they were undetectable (not pounding on your door at 9 a.m.). We knew from previous reviews to ask for a room that did not face I-5 and they honored this request. The room was very quiet.

The location of this hotel is at the very southern end of Tom McCall Park but that is fine because the free streetcar stops less than a block away and will take you where you need to go. The streetcar hooks up with the larger (but not free) Tri-Met and the entire system is very easy to use. The RiverPlace area appears to be fairly new and there were plenty of places to eat along the water.

We did rent a car for two days but avoided paying the steep $21/night parking garage charge as we found metered parking right outside of the hotel on the street (it is free between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. I believe).

The best things about this place are the little market they have downstairs that is full of chips, fruit, sodas, beer, wine, frozen pizzas, etc., that you can purchase after you have been out all day (most toiletries are available too) and the incredible free breakfast buffet in the mornings. It just cannot be beat. Scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, sausage, french toast, fruit, cereals, oatmeal with the fixins, miso soup bar, full soda/juice station. It was AMAZING. They did have a manager's reception or two while we were there (complete with a beer on tap) but we did not attend them. They looked great however.

There is a coin-operated laundry on site ($1 to wash and $1 to dry) with detergents/dryer sheets available for purchase in the laundry room itself. Pool and workout rooms looked great but we did not use them.

Overall we LOVED this place and would recommend it to anyone. It was like a home away from home.

The best rooms, staff, service...and I love the location though you wouldn't think it was great at first glance. My husband and I go away for our anniversary every year - but this year didn't have the time or money to go far...so we stayed across the river, in Portland at this Residence Inn. It was a little strange to be paying money for a vacation less then 20 minutes away from home...but we had the best time and the best deal! (We had booked it through travelportland.com - through their portland perks - check it out...great packages!) We LOVED this hotel. Even though its right below a freeway overpass, we didn't have noise. The pool was great, the staff was VERY helpful and accommodating. The room was like a small apartment with a full kitchen. And its so convenient to everything Portland, from the beautiful waterfront/marina area, bike trails, the street car (which is free in downtown) that will take you to downtown, the Pearl District, Northwest Portland, etc. We had dinner on the waterfront, rented bikes, walked all over. AND the hotel breakfast is amazing everyday. Great hotel - definitely would stay again. We have even thought of coming back for a weekend with our kids. They would love the pool, and all that is so close! (side note: very dog friendly - saw lots of people with their well behaved dogs).

The Residence Inn is a 9 story hotel, essentially located where I-5 & I-405 split, south of downtown Portland. With it's proximity to two highways, you'd expect easy access, but that's one of my beefs - it's rather difficult to get to from the highway system. Not as bad from downtown after you've done it once or twice. It is pretty much directly on the river and only a short walk to the south end of the very long and beautiful waterfront park. It is located right on the streetcar line (note, NOT the light rail, but you can connect to the light rail from the streetcar) and it's (barely) in the downtown free zone, so if you ride north, you don't pay for some time. The hotel seems fairly new. Parking was very expensive, though for whatever reason, they opted not to charge us for our 7 night stay there.

The rooms are typical Residence Inn rooms. I always love having a 2 bedroom unit for my family of 4. Prices were typical, but I stayed using points this time.

We stayed over Memorial Day weekend, and over the holiday weekend itself, the elevator situation was atrocious. 9 stories, yet only 2 elevators. We waited over 15-20 minutes if we tried to leave anytime during the day on the holiday weekend (guessing it was a full hotel), but later in the week, the hotel seemed to empty out and it wasn't a problem.

The pool area is nice with a good sized hot tub. The breakfast was above average with a nice large area for the buffet and to eat in as well.

Nice side point - just one stop south of the hotel is the Portland Aerial Tram which serves the research university that sits atop the hill -- quite fun for the little ones to take the roundtrip and excellent views of Mt. Hood and the city from the top. And just south of there is a nicer Old Spaghetti Factory that sits on the river.
