Three night stay in a city-view King suite room on the 8th floor was very comfortable and quiet.
Extraordinary hot and cold breakfast selections with attentive service from the breakfast staff and a welcoming front desk, especially Bryan. Took streetcar to downtown area and found it easy.

We stayed at the Residence Inn with a large party. We were all in town for a wedding. The service, specifically Bryan at the front desk, was outstanding. We had some special requests for our infant son and Bryan really went out of his way for us. The location is beautiful and convenient but it's the service that would inspire us to stay there again.

Overall we had a great experience. You can't go wrong with a Residence Inn. The location was convenient to the River Walk with several restaurants nearby. Not walking distance to downtown but a street car goes right by the front of the hotel, so it's not an incovenience. The street cars are great and easy to ride. We had a king bed which was super comfortable, (we had requested a mattress topper which helped). We had our adult daughter with us. She slept on the fold out couch and was miserable. I think these sofa beds are fine for small children but not an adult. We requested a mattress topper for the sofa bed, but they only have king size toppers. I had them bring it up anyway and put it on the bed. We couldn't use the sofa because we had to keep the bed pulled out because of the topper but she slept much better. Kudos to the night staff for helping us out with this issue. I agree with some of the other guests about the elevators... we never waited long though. The breakfast is adequate with lots of choices. I really like eating breakfast out and there are many great breakfasts places in Portland, but my husband likes the free breakfast... so we compromise. Parking was expensive, but that's everywhere in downtown Portland. If you don't need a car, use the street car -- it's great!

I'm a Marriott fan but was completely disappointed with this hotel. Institutional is the word for the rooms and the cheap furnishings. Poor views except for a good look at Interstate 5. Poor Internet service. No room safes.

Dear Wsh2905,
Thank you for your comments. I always challenge my staff to find creative ways to meet every guest request. We do offer safety deposit boxes free of charge at hotel and understand the importance of securing your valuables when you are away from the hotel. We also offer many rooms with water and city views but Portland is the "city of bridges" so the water view typically does include some mild street noise. We will be fully renovated come the close of 2014 and hope you'll give us another try. Don't hesitate to call me directly so that I can ensure you have the ideal room placement.

The Residence Inn Portland Downtown/RiverPlace is a very nice property with very nice amenities. The complementary breakfast was good and served in a dining area that while a bit crowded during peak times seemed to have enough space for everyone (there may have been a slight wait). The gym facilities and the pool were modern and seemed to be used popular and well used. The rooms themselves were comfortable.

While I had no problems, I do understand the complaints about the water system. My friend commented that they heard the neighbors use both the toilet as well as the sink. The only other issue with the property, which has also been mentioned in other reviews, is the elevator capacity. During peak hours, there were lines in the lobby to use the elevator. It was commented on several times while I was at the hotel that the elevators took a pretty long time and that often people would have to wait for another elevator car as the current one was full. As I was not in a hurry it didn't bother me but I could see it being a problem for some.

The location of the property was pretty good. It took just a few minutes (maybe 5) to drive to the Old Town/Chinatown/Pearl District areas and once there I ended up paying around $10 each day (weekend rates) to park my car. Once downtown I was pretty much able to walk everywhere. Right next to the hotel was a paved waterfront trail that ran by some restaurants and cafes before joining Waterfront Park, where they have the amazing Saturday Market.

Overall, I thought the Residence Inn was a nice place to stay and would have no problem staying there in the future.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite for 3 nights. There were 6 of us - two couples in the bedrooms and 2 others on the fold out couch in the living room. Very clean and comfortable suite. My only issue was that the 2 bathrooms were inside the 2 bedrooms which made it very awkward for the 2 people who were staying in the living room to use them during the night without disturbing those in the bedroom. The breakfast each morning was great - lots of variety! We attended the Bites of Oregon Festival, which was within comfortable walking distance of our hotel.

Room Tip: Phone ahead and request a room with a balcony.

I have stayed at this property 3 times, most recently August 2013. Granted this was a peak summer weekend, but this property always seems to have notably slow elevator service, which is why I focus on this in my review. The building is 9 stories with over 30 rooms per floor, and the building has only two guest elevators. It is common on weekend mornings to see a line of people waiting for an elevator to go back upstairs after breakfast. Around check-out time, one may wait several minutes for an elevator to the lobby as several stop on your floor but are already full of guests and luggage heading down from floors higher than yours. It is a remarkably short-sighted design for a relatively new building. Other than this shortcoming, it is a great property in a perfect location, and I plan to return in the future.

Room Tip: Try to get on a low floor so taking the stairs is practical, and you won't have the inconvenienc...
