Looking for a good, well-located hotel near enough yet far enough from the direct downtown area on our first visit to Portland, my wife and I chose the Residence Inn Portland Downtown River Place. For what we wanted, this hotel was a great fit. The Residence Inn is located right along the Willamette River, with direct access to a great riverfront path that is ideal for running, walking, or biking. Along that path, there are also a number of small shops and restaurants. As for the hotel itself, as can be expected from most Residence Inns, there is a full, complimentary breakfast, an ample fitness center, and a decent pool.

It should be noted that this hotel is downtown in a technical sense. To get to a majority of Portland’s best restaurants and attractions, it will be necessary to drive or take a cab. However, for travelers like us, we appreciated the quiet surroundings and were willing to make the short trek to downtown proper.

As for drawbacks, the $25/night self-parking fee seems a little steep for what is a pretty uncongested area. Also, the furnishings and dishwasher are a little on the older side, which is something you might not even notice if you haven’t stayed at one of the newer Residence Inns.

As other reviewers have recommended, I would suggest requesting a room located on the other side of the building from the freeway.

Had a nice stay in a 2br unit, the room was ready early, the managers happy hour was great and almost made a meal. The breakfast was amazing/ The room was very nice and clean. I would stay again, the only downside is the hotel charges for parking and it seems they own the lot, with regular rates at almost 180 a nigh, I would have given it 5 stars if the parking was included.

Room Tip: Room was near highway, but was quiet and I am a light sleeper.

Dear MWATT,
Thank you for commenting on the cleanliness of the hotel! You can always rely on Marriott to provide clean, comfortable and classy accommodations. I understand your hesitation about paying for overnight parking. This is customary in downtown proper and we are actually one of the lowest prices in the city. Next time, however, be sure to ask for alternative parking and our front desk staff can give you some options for street parking, although it is limited. Cheers!

We stayed here for 3 nights during the Oregon Beer Festival. For us, the location was perfect -short walking distance to the water front park. If you want to venture elsewhere, you can take the streetcar (a few steps away), or walk. This hotel was very busy when we were there, but we had no problems with breakfast, getting an elevator, or using the laundry facilities. The front desk was very helpful and friendly. Rooms were spacious (we had an efficiency). We didn't have a room with any view, just looking at the office building across the street. If you want a great view, you will need to stay at the Marriott Waterfront hotel. We would stay here again.

All the usual amenities of a Residence Inn with an exceptional breakfast and well-equipped fitness center. They allow pets, too, and there were quite a few when I was there. The location is on a streetcar line so it's easy to get around town but it might have been even better to be in the lively downtown area. My room didn't have a waterfront view but the riverfront park promenade was just a block away. Make sure to take the aerial tram for a great view of the city; it's only $4 for the ride up and free for the ride down. The lower station is just a couple blocks south of the hotel.

Room Tip: upper floors have a nice view but only if you're facing the river.

Although this hotel may not be in the most exciting part of town, it was only a short drive to many of Portland's attractions and the light rail stop is nearby. Our room was clean and spacious. The breakfast buffet was pretty awesome - a rotating menu of hot foods, plus cereal, pastries and fresh fruit. Be sure to get there on the early side to make sure you have a place to sit! Parking was a little steep at $25/day, but overall we were satisfied with our stay.

Room Tip: Our room on the top floor was very quiet, but we probably should have requested a more interesting view.
