I have worked as a barista for many years and coming to Portland for the first time I made it a priority to see what shops were the best in town.
The way I see it Coava has the complete package. Knowledgeable baristas, on-site roasting, unique space, clean bathrooms.
Extra points for customer service. The barista working the machine was able to speak eloquently about the various coffees they were offering and helped me settle on a macchiato and a bag of Colombian beans. We chatted for a while and he recommended other coffee shops around Portland that I should check out before I leave. Good to see shops looking out for each other.
Location is pretty cool because a few blocks closer to the river there are some relatively new lunch joints and other coffee companies doing their thing.

Great space to hang out and enjoy their delicious coffee. We met some very friendly and helpful Portlanders (is that what people from Portland are called?) who gave us some great recommendations for our visit.

We came upon this place by surprise. We had been at the OMSI and were just walking around that side of town. Not a very touristy area - much more industrial feeling. We were getting a little hungry so we figured we could stop and rest our feet while having a coffee and treat. This isn't like your typical chain coffee spot. This place is big and is shared with a woodwork company. I want to say it was done with bamboo. They also roast their own coffee. The menu is limited with a few types of coffee and small pastries. We decided on traditional lattes and a blueberry muffin. This was by far the best latte I've ever had. It was so rich and creamy that I didn't have to add any type of sweetener. This is out of the ordinary for me as I usually have to add a couple packets of the yellow stuff! And to make a great thing even better, they did a lovely foam decoration in the shape of a heart. The muffin was also delicious. I will definitely go back next time I'm in Portland!
