Nice Hotel

Review of Paramount Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 6, 2007
The staff was friendly, rooms were clean, and the location was convenient. Breakfast at the restaurant was great. There was some construction taking place directly across from the Hotel but work didn't begin early enough to disturb me. My room had a jetted bath tub, but the water only got lukewarm, making a soak less than perfection. Otherwise, absolutely no complaints!

I booked two deluxe rooms through Expedia for a great price($125/night on the weekend) and was very pleased. The rooms were large and very clean. Beds were quite comfortable and the bathroom large and well-lit. The location is outstanding - right in the main downtown area and just a couple of blocks from MAX and streetcar lines. Although there is a huge excavation/construction project going
on immediately across the street, we weren't bothered by noise at all (room was on the 9th floor). Valet parking is a bit steep at $25/night but that is par for the course in downtown Portland. Did not try the restaurant (sushi) or room service. Staff was very friendly and helpful except for the concierge, who was never at his post and when we did track him down, gave us some erroneous information about the shuttle at Washington Park that caused us a wasted MAX trip. Other than that, an excellent hotel experience.

Recently the girls in my family took a trip to Portland to bond and shop, and celebrate a birthday. We booked two rooms at the Paramount.

Good Things:

Rooms are clean and include all amenities one might expect.
Housekeeping staff is excellent! Our particular lady was so sweet and did a great job.
Small but clean work out room and business center.
Great location - especially for shopping.
Good hotel restaurants downstairs.
Friendly staff.
Overall very pleasant place to stay.

Room for Improvement:

No pool or hot tub.
Computer in business center down during our stay.
Room service menu descriptions were slightly deceptive (what we ordered was not exactly what we got - specifically there was no ice cream included on pie that said it came "with hand-made chocolate ice cream" - we never heard back on why... were they out? Who knows, they certainly didn't tell us!)
Night staff not knowledgeable (I called to ask for a late check out and the front desk said he couldn't do that for me and I would have to call back in the morning. When I asked what time was usually given as the "late check out" time he had no idea.)
View from rooms (One room looked out onto a lovely cement parking garage - the other onto a gaping hole in the ground and ugly construction area.)
Staff gave us incorrect directions and we spent 30 minutes lost in Portland - although we did subsequently stumble upon a few great places while lost.

Read some of the reviews here after having booked on Priceline. Didn't have to worry about construction, in my opinion you can get that anywhere, especially downtown, and not something to complain about. The location is great when you want to explore Portland by foot. Parking was a slight pain as we had to park about 5 blocks away to get the 3 or 5 hour parking during the day, and free parking at night. We wanted to avoid the overpriced valet only night parking that the hotel charges, and the lot parking... but its downtown so what do you expect? Hotel rooms were standard, but nice, clean, and fairly large. Decor is a little better than your standard hotel room. The Fusion/Japanese restaurant downstairs is nice for a drink. We were expecting wireless internet in the room, but apparently you have to pay. Otherwise there are 2 computers in the basement to use. Overall for the price we paid on Priceline ($89 in April) it was a pretty good value.

I was in Portland for a wedding and had a wonderful experience at the Paramount Hotel. The staff was really helpful with providing us information, recommendations and map of how to get around downtown. The hotel was in walking distance to most things and you could get on the Max Line or Streetcar only a block away to get to the Pearl district and the waterfront. They have great sushi specials in their lounge which was perfect place to meet up with our friends. I hope to make it back to Portland soon and I would certainly recommend the hotel!

If you are looking for a clean and comfortable hotel, this hotel will fit the bill. If you want something a little different try somewhere else. The Paramount Hotel was quite boring. The room looked no different than a Holiday Inn. The furniture was cheap typical motel decor. The bed linens were nice. I really liked the light colored duvet, as you are able to see any scary spills. The bed was comfortable, as were the pillows. The carpet was new and clean. The bathroom was roomy, although there was only one sink and it was within the entire bathroom. It was very clean. The toilet was not properly secured to the floor and it rocked every time anyone sat down. You are provided with "specialty" toiletries made just for The Paramount. Meaning cheap products put into a fancy wrapper. The towels were new, but were very rough. There was no bathrobe or slippers provided. There was no doorman, no bellhop, no valet parking attendant. The desk clerks checked us in and offered no other niceties. They were not rude, but they were not very friendly. The bar and restaurant were hopping in the evening. We ate breakfast at the restaurant and the service was outstanding. Both waiters were friendly and offered tips for seeing the city. The food was good and fast. This was not a 4 star hotel. I would have been very disappointed had I paid rack rate. I used Priceline. As someone else mentioned this is not a child friendly hotel. I didn't hear any construction action, even though it is going on across the street. To save money on parking you can take your car to the garage two doors up and pay $15 for 24 hours. Overall this is a fine, clean, convenient hotel. I just didn't say "Wow" when I walked into the door.
