“Boutique Hotel with a View of a Construction Lot”
Reviewed May 21, 2009

The Paramount Hotel in downtown Portland Oregon was once at the center of shopping and good restaurants. It is as if the entire hot shopping and dining scene has migrated to the Northwest district and the Paramount is stuck in a forgotten section of town.

Perhaps the hotel doesn't recognize this as they offer no self parking and the valet is a staggering $28 per night. It takes them a good 10 minutes to fetch your car and they will not do so until you come down to the lobby. If you simply drive a block or so north on SW Taylor Street - plenty of parking abounds for rates under $10 a night. We were there on the weekend and there was no lack of parking - once again due to the location of the hotel.

Now you are close to Pioneer Square and within easy walking distance of the MAX light rail station but this is hardly a reason to stay at this particular hotel. Directly across from the hotel is a fairly large construction project - which in its present state does not offer the best views from the hotel.

One thing odd we noticed was the staff was abrupt and rather curt when checking in or simply asking for directions to the MAX station. In contrast to this, the guests in the hotel were very friendly and easy to converse with. We wouldn't have even noticed this if the staff was not so unfriendly.

Rooms were very dated, bedding was worn as well as the pillows. TV channels were limited and ice machines are located on every other floor. Overall while it was not the worst hotel we stayed at it certainly does not qualify for the 3.5 star many travel sites give it. 2.5 star hotel - location and staff kill this hotel.

Good stay. Nice location, nice lobby, nice rooms.

On WiFi being free or not: it is confusing. When you check in, they tell you it's complimentary at the front desk. When you get to your room, TV advertisements says it costs. So we called front desk to clarify. Turns out, they haven't updated their room advertisements....it is free afterall, you just need to ask the front desk for the access code.

I agree with other reviewers...cheap, self-park garages are plentiful, withing easy walking distance, one block max.

We sponantiously checked into the Paramount after checking out of another hotel due to a poor experience. The front desk was friendly from the get-go and upon hearing of our situation gave us a non-requested complimentary room upgrade. I have stayed at the Paramount a couple of times and the rooms are spacious for this newer generation of hotel. Quality finishes thoughout and comfortable beds and linens. The hotel is quiet, clean and pleasant.

The hotel is ideally located in the middle of downtown, walking distance to anything. Parking is a ridiculous $28/nt, but there is $4 parking next door, and free evening/weekend parking on the street. The hotel has few "facilities" (pool, gym, etc), but two nice restaurant/bars off the lobby. There are a couple of treadmills. I believe you can get a guest pass to a nearby gym. A peeve of mine, in this day and age, is that WiFi is $10/nt. I think it should be as free as lighting (that's just me). The Wifi charge is contrary the website which says it is complimentary.

If you require facilities, I recommend the Hilton across the street which is similar in all respects, but has a full gym, spa and pool.

Overall, a consistantly good experience with this hotel and nary a poor service experience.

The room was a good size and the location is great but they charged us a $50 pet fee which I think is outrageous. They said it was because they have to steam clean the carpets after a pet stays in the room but our carpet was already dirty. They charge $29 to park which is too high so we self-parked in the garage just across the street for $10. The restaurant had good food and drinks. They also charge for wifi in your room.

We stayed at the Paramount for three nights. After a check-in procedure that did not go as smoothly as it should have, we settled in. Our room was lovely -- good decor, great bed linens, large bathroom with good amenities and fast internet access.

Although there is an active construction project across the street from the hotel, we were not disturbed by any noise.

The Dragon Fish restaurant serves good American breakfasts and then becomes an Asian restaurant for lunch and dinner. The hotel also has a bar/lounge.

I will stay at the Paramount next time I'm in Portland.

This was my third time staying at the Paramount. We stayed for Rose Festival. It is a chain hotel but it definitely can rise to the ocassion needed. In 2006 I had my wedding at the Portland Chinese Garden. The rooms are large for my bridesmaids to get ready. Bell staff received flowers and had them ready for the room. We traveled from arizona so they inspected our gowns to see if we needed them pressed. The concierge booked our nail and hair appointments which were extensive since our entire wedding featured orchids from the orchid exchange. These were in our hair and held as bouquets. Making these reservations the timing was important.

The Dragon Fish is a wonderful restaurant featuring asian fusion. If you have never had Pacific Rim Asian Fusion your in for treat. We had our impromptu rehearsal dinner there and it was a bargain. Try their Mongolain Lamb Pillows or French Toast with fresh strawberries. There coffee the local brand boyds is wonderful.

The new ampitheater is a concern I have. I hope it will not make the paramount to noisey to relax and take in my beloved city Portland Oregon!

Just returned from a business trip to Portland, and spent 3 nights at the Paramount Hotel. Overall I would say the hotel is average---nothing bad, but nothing to really distinguish itself from the other hotels in the area.

The most important issue right now that the hotel has no control over is the huge construction site that is directly across the street from the hotel. Noise was not a problem on the weekend when we arrived, but on Monday morning, the noise starts by 7:30am. It wasn't a problem for us, since we were getting ready for business meetings, but don't expect to sleep in on weekdays. Also, don't expect the construction to be done any time soon. It appeared to be just beginning, and could be an issue at this hotel for months.

Our room had 2 queen beds. The beds were comfortable, the pillows were not. The linens and towels were thin and not the quality I've come to expect from hotels these days. I had read about jetted tubs, but our bathroom tub was standard. Overall, the room was a bit shabby in appearance with worn looking furniture, stained carpet, mildewy bathroom tile grout. Nothing to make me run, just enough to make me think the place needed to pay a little more attention to the details. And one of my pet peeves---highly perfumed room deodorizer that seemed to be used daily.

That said, the staff was very friendly and offered help and good suggestions when requested. Our room was modest but reasonably priced, clean and comfortable. I do recommend the Dragonfish happy hour----great sushi prices and and fun place!
