“Great rooms, service, food and music!”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

We stayed here for only one night, and just loved it! The rooms are all different themes, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the pool was great. Al's Den had really good music and drinks as well. Great location downtown, lots of good stores nearby. Only thing on the minus side is no parking, and they charge $25 a night to park. However, I would recommend this place to everyone I know!

The location of the Crystal Hotel is awesome! It was so convenient to walk to a bunch of great restaurants, stores, and to the MAX. The hotel decor is fun and unique. We were concerned about the shared bathrooms but they were very well maintained (cleaned multiple times throughout the day) and bathrobes were provided. Also, the soaking pool downstairs is a nice way to relax after a day of sightseeing.

My spouse and I stayed here for three nights in July. Very nice building in a great location. The staff were friendly and the building was clean. We never had to wait for one of the shared bathrooms. The saltwater pool was very relaxing and bigger than I expected.

We paid $95 per night so the Crystal Hotel is a great value. As can be expected when you're paying this amount, the rooms are on the small side. One of the other reviewers correctly noted that there isn't much space for storage. We also found that the hotel itself and the room sometimes smelled musty - maybe because it's a historic building? In part due to the excellent location, you can sometimes hear noises from the street.

Overall, a very good hotel for a very reasonable price.

The Crystal was one of our many highlights on our Portland trip. We knew it would be unique to anywhere we had ever stayed, but it still even surpassed our expectations. We had the King Suite, and it was beautiful. As soon as we walked in, I ran downstairs to see if we could stay for a second night, but it was already booked. The bathroom was beautiful and made us feel like we had a private spa in our room. On top of that, you also have the saltwater pool in the basement next to the lounge, which was the perfect way to end the evening. The location was perfect, and it is next to a Whole Foods, which was nice because we could stock our room with goodies. Great stay!

Room Tip: The suites are great--a little pricey, but it is nice to have a private bathroom.

The rooms here are all unique and really cool. You can't really go wrong. Of course, you have to be OK with the shared bathrooms (you lock the door, so it's just one person at a time), and they are always clean, so it was never an issue for us. The soaking pool downstairs is great as well (even if they stubbornly won't open it in the middle of the night when you drunkenly request it.). Overall, awesome location, decent price for what you get, and would stay again in a second!

We have stayed at other McMenamins hotels and ,even though this wasn't the biggest of their facilities , it provided a great place to stay in Portland. The location is great, within walking distance or public transportation of most of the major sights in Portland. The rooms are small, but cozy, fun and clean. We enjoyed the soaking pool and the complimentary coffee and paper in the morning. But we were especially impressed when one of the staff called ( very soon after checkout) to tell us that we had left our phone charger and some jewelry there. We were very thankful and appreciative of this quick notice.

Here was our experience: Friendly staff, small (but nice) room. We stayed three nights mid-week and couldn't get a room with private bath. So, the bath down the hall was always clean and tidy and only had difficulty with it being occupied once.

Issues:

1) Parking. They offer a limited number of spaces at $25 a day at a garage a block away. The selling point is that you get in/out privileges. Here's the down side: the spaces are very close together and (from what I experienced) spaced unevenly. We came back one night to find one space left. A space so tight that my side mirrors cleared the side mirrors of the cars on either side by 2 INCHES! How did I get out of the car? I had to go to circus school and then make an attempt. I was very careful, but discovered the next day that the hotel guest parked on our right was not so kind and we ended up with a fairly severe ding/notch of paint missing. I would recommend avoiding this garage. Parking in the area seems to be relatively inexpensive at $6-$8 a day. Try the lot kitty-corner from the garage. Tell the lot employee you're a hotel guest and try to work out a deal. At worst, if you move your car, you'll have to pay $16! And you'll save hundreds in body work.

2) The floor of the room above us had two spots that made ungodly creaking noises. I'm a heavy sleeper, but not when this noise is combined with 4am. I was awakened each night by the creaking and wondered why a better construction job hadn't been done when this building had been converted into a hotel.

3) Finally, the last morning of our stay I pulled the covers off and noticed the largest dust cloud I've ever seen in my life! This place hadn't been open two months when we stayed and I can only imagine the covers hadn't been washed during that period. I'm rarely skeeved out, but this unsettled me and can only hope that this was an anomaly. Either way, that is pretty gross...

Again, a decent place with a few things to be aware of. Hope our experience can make yours better.
