Perhaps it was the company, perhaps the cocktails, but all-in-all, a most adventurous and satisfying evening of food. Service was flawless (nice to find a new napkin when returning from the rest room!), beautiful room and nice lighting. I wanted to try everything on the menu; between the four of us we managed to order about half of it to share. Could quibble with the bisque, but the mussels more than made up for it!

Good location on city transit, not too large a place including the second floor balcony, and fine bistro food. All good on our recent visit. And on your way out, you can stop by the windows in the shop next door to see the kitchen staff at work. My wife and gave polite applause to staff who appreciated our pleasure.

Service was adequate at best. Entree (veal) was primarily fat, unedible. I had hoped for more based on the prices.

The concierge at our downtown Portland hotel suggested Little Bird Bistro for a walk-in no reservation restaurant nearby to the hotel. He called, and unfortunately they were booked, with an hour wait (called at 6:15 p.m. first open table 8 p.m.)

Exhausted from a full conference day, we wanted to eat early and near the hotel, so hubby and I walked down the street 2 blocks to Little Bird Bistro (219 SW 6TH AVE. PORTLAND, OR 97204) and played reservation lottery. Always a chance, we're eternal optomists. The storefront entrance is small, but two or three umbrellad tables, with people enjoying a bottle of wine gave it away.

The restaurant was packed at 7:00 p.m but the hostess, told us there'd be 2 seats at the corner of the bar within a half hour! We love sitting at the bar, and so we happily people-watched and enjoyed the sightlines for about 15 minutes. The ceiling is pressed tiles of tin, and 2-stories up -- gorgeous. A balcony seating area soars at the back of the restaurant. The well-stocked bar seats 10 or 12. As soon as we ordered a beer, our corner seats were available. They allowed for great views of the restaurant and also were a little quieter than the tables.

I had a glass of Bordeaux, Château Peybonhomme Les Tours, ‘09 $10 and hubby had 1811 Lager, Fort George Brewery, OR $6 from the tap. And we had a second of both when our entree arrived. Both were fabulous!

We started with Butter Lettuce, green goddess, radishes, breadcrumbs......$9 for the gentleman, who loved both the presentation and the hidden radishes. The lady had three raw Sudoku oysters $2.75 each. The oysters were served on rock salt, and were plump and smoky sweet. The mignonette had a touch of sweetness from shallots, according the the bartender. Heavenly!

For entrees, hubby had grilled trout, green beans, marcona almonds, brown butter hollandaise*..$22 and I had the grilled chicken breast, spaetzle, mushrooms, pancetta, truffled pistou......$23 Both were so delicious, and every bite was perfect. The people seated next to us had crispy sweetbreads and the couple on the other side of us were enjoying homemade Madelines with strawberry & rosé compote, mascarpone crémeux. Great gastro-watching from our seats!

We didn't opt for dessert, as we had just received a bag of Brussels truffles that day. We opened them up back in our hotel room, and enjoyed them with a paper cup of fresh cappuccino from the hotel restaurant. Not Little Bird Bistro, but not bad!

Little Bird is rated one of the top Portland restaurants by all the rating websites (currently 28 of 1,247), but don't let that deter you from rating it yourself. And if there is a wait, have a glass of the excellent draft beer, and enjoy the people, art, color and ceiling of this charming reastautant. Even if the significant other is afraid of french food (mine isn't) he or she will find plenty of comfort on the menu.

We highly recommend Little Bird Bistro, it was the best restaurant we have visited on our week long trip to Portland! I'd make a special trip back just to eat here!

Lovely little spot in the Pearl district. Creative chef and wonderful food and service. If it's on the menu, don't miss the Tuna Nicoise. And the burger's fanatastic too!
