“So serene!”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Loved the visit to Lan Su, very tranquil. Our guide was great and shared many nuances regarding the garden. So hard to believe it is in the middle of the city. The garden paths are different in each room and add to the experience. the tea house is lovely. A definite must see if you are looking for a place to get away from it all in the city.

“Sunny October Day”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This garden has all the features of a Suzhou garden as it was built by Chinese workers from that area. Beautiful, and even better to be there in the fall on a warm sunny afternoon. Refreshing.

“Worth The Effort”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Seemed like there were a lot of areas under repair, so a little worn around the edges but a living history lesson nonetheless. Worth the effort if you like Chinese culture.

“Unexpected and rewarding”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The Lan Su Chinese Garden is hidden away but that is the point. It is worth the trip to find it. It is very different from the Japanese Garden, so it would be good to visit both. The whole garden is enclosed and tucked into the middle of the city with lovely plants, expertly designed stone walkways, and vistas that look like Chinese paintings. The experience is not what you get in a big American style botanic garden, you have to put yourself in a contemplative mood and really look at the whole thing -- not just the plants. Some things that look unkempt to Western eyes are intended that way. And when you have "done" the garden, be sure to go to the tea house and have a relaxing Chinese tea experience looking out on the garden.
