This Chinese-style garden is well-maintained with excellent volunteer docents who add a bit of colorful flavor to the garden experience. Enjoy the textures of the pebbles beneath your feet as you glimpse snippets of the hustle and bustle of the world outside.

My daughters and I had tea one afternoon in the Chinese Gardens. The tea (and moon cakes) were wonderful. The gardens and buildings in the compound appeared to be authentic. It was a lovely afternoon we spent there.

Portland's Chinatown was totally disappointing. It has been gentrified and taken over by new housing developments and American businesses. I was expecting that the Lan Su Chinese Garden was going to be equally disappointing but it was a real treat after walking through Chinatown/Old Town. The separate areas for the tea house, calligraphy room, etc. were worth entering and exploring, unlike most museums and gardens. The koi are beautiful, and even though there was a tai chi class, we enjoyed the peacefulness of the garden.

The gift shop was a great stop as well. The only drawback is that the garden is pretty small.

This place is lovely but without the tour you could miss a lot. After the tour make sure you've left time to have tea and biscuits at the tea shop in the garden.
