Love this little gem of a place tucked away in SE! This is a casual place (you order at the counter at they bring the food to you) with a lot of charm.

The GF and I have tried everything from the rice noodle stir fries, to the delicious curries, to the garlic shrimp, and the banh mi (Vietnamese baguette) sandwiches. Everything was fantastic! They naturally have a wide selection of teas and the guys at the counter even help you pick one out depending on what kind of food you order. And don't forget the fresh sesame ball pastries!

The place does tend to get crowded and parking can be a bear during these times. Recommend getting there right when they open to avoid these hassles. You won't regret it!

Jade has a menu that has a wide variety of interesting Asian or fusion Asian dishes and sandwiches, which have always been very good. And lots of desserts; one that is perhaps more intriguing than good is a sphere of dough (fried or maybe baked, I can't quite tell) that's covered with sesame seeds and served with a sweet sauce. I don't know if that dessert has an Asian origin; their other desserts are generally American or European.

You order at the counter and sit down at a table and they bring your food over.

There are two downsides: this place seems to always be very crowded during lunch. If it's too cold or rainy to eat outside, there is not very much table space inside. Quite frequently I see that the lines are long or there's no space to eat, and end up going somewhere else. (Less than half a block away is Mekong, a restaurant with a more limited menu but food that's just as good and that I have never seen crowded.) Even at 1:30 on a weekday it can be hard to find a space to eat. Arriving a little before noon however might work.

And although the service at the counter is helpful and friendly, the table service sometimes forgets to bring one of the items that you ordered.

In short, the menu is fantastic and the food is good, but the overall experience is not as excellent.

My mother and I were out hunting for the best macaroons in Portland and the Jade Bistro was on our list. While buying cookies there, we saw the bustling dining room and the very happy diners. We decided to return a few days later for lunch. The macaroons were very good and lunch was even better.Don't expect to be waited on here. You order and pay at the counter, they give you a number and you pick up your utensils and find a table. They have both inside and outside seating, and the place is very crowded and noisy-but when they bring you your food, you forget all about that. We started with the salad rolls with peanut dipping sauce. The rolls were freshly made and the dipping sauce had just the right balance and salty and sweet. I had the eggplant with shrimp and my mom had the garlic chicken with broccoli. Both lunches were a good size, had well made sauces and the vegetables and proteins were cooked brilliantly, really a spectacular lunch for both of us.

What an interesting mix of food choices (Asian cuisine and French pastries) with a really attentive staff. Definitely a place to return to.

When Lucy Eklund discovered she was gluten intolerant, every similarly situated diner in the area had reason to celebrate. Lucy and her daughter April opened this Vietnamese restaurant in the Sellwood neighborhood on Portland's Eastside. The format is casual -- you order at a front counter and the food is brought to you at a table -- and everything except the baguettes is sans gluten. And the cuisine? Delicious (and then some), inventive (with touches of France and Laos, and modestly priced (especially if you select several dishes to share). My spouse is the "glutenard" (to borrow a term from one fellow diner on a rent visit) but I am more than happy to go along for this ride. It has become one of our favorite restaurants in Portland (which says a lot).

We have been eating at Jade's since they first opened and it is our VERY FAVORITE! The food is so delicious and fresh and prepared so well, that we always feel great after eat. So many healthy choices! The owner and the staff are always so attentive, kind and helpful. It is so popular, that it gets very crowded, but you never feel that your order, or your questions don't matter. We love going to Jade when we need to feel "cared for".
