“A Cool Building and an Excellent Theater Company”

Dropping in on the Gerding Theater at the Armory is well worth a few minutes when you are strolling through Portland's Pearl District. It's a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the traffic and crowds in this popular urban shopping and dining district. This fantastic renovation of an 1891 armory building has created a cool and edgy space inside the historic structure that's well worth a peek inside. Plus, the Armory Cafe offers a nice selection of snacks, coffee and refreshments so you can spend some time enjoying this neat space. Step inside, look around, get a snack and take a break for a few minutes.

Best of all is that this is the home of Portland Center Stage, Portland's leading professional theater company. They produce a fantastic array of high-quality theater, ranging from major production in the Gerding, to cutting edge work in the smaller Ellen bye Studio Theater. Be sure to stop by the information kiosk in the lobby to check out their upcoming productions. We've not been disappointed. A perfect day of shopping and dining in the Pearl can even include catching a matinee or evening performance.

“Good stage”

The building was rebuild and has that modern "old and sustainable" look. It does it's job as a theater really well. I've played in it and I've been in the audience. In both cases I've been happy with the experience.

“Lovely old building”

We saw Storm Large in a play a few years ago, and the theater is quaint and on the small side. There were really no bad seats there. The one drawback seemed to be the bathrooms in the basement. The Gerding is near a lot of upscale restaurants and shops. Make an evening of it.

This is one of my favorite theatres in town - PCPA is forward-thinking and I always enjoy myself here. Nice space, layout, vibe, etc. Just need easier parking!

“Portland Center Stage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

They are a very good theatre company in Portland. They typically have two shows going at the same time in their two theaters. It is well worth checking out. They just finished a run of SWEENEY TODD and it was fabulous. I know they rent this facility which makes it crowded when attending a show there.
