“Underwhelmed by the Pearl”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Scattered about there are random shops of interest with diner dives and typical coffee shops sprinkled in between. But, I'm sorry those stores of interest are here a block, down two blocks and make a right, then zig zag up the street another direction for one or two more uniquely Portland shops. Don't get me wrong, I like a good walk, even in the rain. But, my shopping experiences trend toward that of what you find on NW 23rd. Where on one street for blocks on end you can stroll through various stores some of which like Kitchen Kaboodle are unique to Portland. The Pearl may be what's trending in Portland, but give me the eclectic mix on and just off 23rd, where Thrift stores to William Sonoma and Restoration Hardware, to Three Monkeys and local designer dress stores have kept us coming back for 18 years.

“Groovy and cool in Portland, Oregon”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Only two places to visit and hangout in Portland, Orgeon - Nob Hill, Alphabet District and the Pearl District. Regenerated, new and fresh with all of the old feel - vert trendy and family friendly.

“Compact, walkable Portland”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Stayed with friends in this neighborhood. We walked everywhere - to the Willamette River, the historic train station, Powell Books, parks everywhere (some with kid-friendly water features), food truck parks, affordable and delicious restaurants, and so much more. Can't wait to go back.

Having heard the hype about the Pearl District, I thought it would something special, but in reality it's just a rehabbed area of downtown Portland which has benefited from good public relations and marketing. Except for signs marking the area, unlike the thematic Gaslamp District in San Diego or Old Town in Sacramento, for example, the Pearl is undefined. You'll do a lot of walking looking for a central area (there isn't one). There are, however, a lot of brewhouses. Interestingly, what the city promotes as a special district is simply a commercial area. It's as if they said "let's brand this area a certain way and make it seem special." No pearl shops by the way, but several jewelry stores. And I thought maybe if I looked harder I'd see The Pearl from Pirates of the Carribean . . . alas no luck, matey. There are better things to do in Portland.

“Great introduction to Portland”
Reviewed August 7, 2013 via mobile

Try to go on "First Thursday" because shops are open late. High quality art and glassworks. Interesting architecture. Variety of restaurants & pubs. Music and a lively crowd.
