Description: Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

Apparently if your are Canadian, female and not a 32DDD. Don't try to go here with out your passport, a letter from the Canadian Embassy, and most likely, your mother to vouch for you.... Interesting, the middle aged guy with the Rolex and the cash roll who lives in the same house as I do is permitted, but not the woman he is with..... Shame on you NINES and Your associated establishments!!!

CANADIANS NOT WELCOME. Our party was just rudely turned away (tonight) from Departures rooftop lounge at the Nines Hotel in downtown Portland because our Canadian drivers licenses did not suffice as ID. WE WEREN't however told this until waaaay down the trek of getting from the lobby to the 15th floor deck, where the server asked for our drink order, then broke the news she couldnt serve us w/out passports. We were told to produce passports or leave. I suppose the reason for declining us service seems legitimate - we were not carring our passports in our tiny purses (they were in our safety deposit box back at the hotel, like any good traveller.) But the pretentious manager, soon backed by a second pretentious manager standing "bouncer" like beside him, really wasn't necessary for two well-dressed (kinda cute), professional Canadian girls. When asked why they didn't advertise this rule (a) in their lobby, (b) in the elevator, (c) told by a hostess , (d) somewhere in the long hallway where we first stood in line (e) somewhere in the hallway were we stood in line again (f) nor posted in sight anywhere behind the bar ... the manager said "because we don't have to." NICE. Way to love and appreciate your Canadian fans...not. there are MANY awesome pubs/clubs in Portland that would LOVE your business, and show you in many ways. THIS PLACE IS DEFINATELY NOT ONE OF THEM. DO NOT waste your time or money there. Cheers to OTHER Portland bars, NOT DEPARTURES.

We went for dinner and a view. Nice décor. The food was very good and unusual. The service was very good. Not too loud. Not terribly expensive. Asian with a twist. We went with the waitresses recommendations and weren't disappointed. The balconies were crowded at sunset but the view was nice. The crowd was unusual. Men in high heals next to middle age tourists. I enjoyed this restaurant.

The restrooms alone are worth the visit!

I've dined at the property a number of times and found things very consistent.... A very busy and popular, great food and drink, but very mixed on the quality of waitstaff.

Well worth doing and on a nice evening the balcony is hard to beat. The portions and food are fantastic and my recommendation is if your waiter/waitress disappears, simply get a different one, which made our experience considerably better by the end of the evening.
