Description: Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

We went for snacks and drinks without knowing anything about this place. Not sure what we were getting into when we got off the elevator, very upscale/sci-fi(?) decor. Host was very friendly and took us out to the patio... Wow... What a view. We ordered some drinks and food and were not disappointed, the few plates we ordered to share were exceptional. Highly recommend this (weather permitting) as a special thing to do while in Portland, great view of the city in a posh yet friendly environment.

Departure in Portland is just that - a departure from the smaller city feeling and the sensation of being in a big city bar and restaurant. Fantastic views, outdoor dining and drink and the best bartenders in Portland. Amazingly, the food is on par with the bar and the atmosphere which rarely happens. No matter what, be sure to try the brussels sprouts.

This restaurant was wonderful! View of Portland was beautiful. Although there is a deck, we opted to sit inside. The service was excellent and the staff was very helpful in making recommendations. The food was not only beautifully presented but was delicious.

I didn't have the food, but it was a very pleasant outdoor bar experience - the kind you find these days in LA and NYC. It is a unique place in Portland, and I'll be back and maybe taste the food. (I was there when it first opened and the food wasn't great, but i expect they have worked out the kinks)
