The best time to visit would be on a sunny day. This will typically involve larger crowds, but, that's part of the fun. On our visit, the crowds were present due to a big concert in the zoo that evening. Parking at the zoo can be hard to find, but, they have a satellite parking lot that they run free shuttles to and from. We took advantage of that and had a great time seeing all the wonderful animals. The caracals, hippos, bears, and elephants were particularly active and entertaining on our visit.

Our trip to the zoo was wonderful. There are lots of great places to stop and rest and lots for little ones to do. The meandering paths are great and there are a lot of interactive learning displays as you go. We missed the last train that runs through the park, but will be sure to go next time. Adults and kids in our large party all had a great time. I did feel like I was being rushed along due to the size of our group and will be sure to take more time on my next trip. Wear your walking shoes.

We had a great visit to the Oregon Zoo, Portland! This was our first time visiting the zoo. I loved the paths that went thru the zoo. There were a lot of places to stop and sit. We found it very pleasant even on this hottest of days. The zoo had water for us too! Everything was so clean, including all of the exhibits. My only disappointment was the train ride. You do not see anything on this ride, no animals or other sights. And no fun facts being told during the ride either. Do not spend the $5.00 per person to ride the train. But do spend the extra time seeing all the wonderful animal exhibits.

The best part of the zoo is the first part of the trail that keeps all exhibits local to the Pacific Northwest. They've kept it wild to the greatest extent possible and it feels unique to Oregon with up and down trails through heavily wooded forest. The remainder of the zoo is pretty typical for a zoo, much like the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and the Denver Zoo. If you take light rail to the zoo they discount your zoo admission ticket by $1.50 (show them your Metro ticket). The Washington Park/Zoo station brings you right to the front gates of the zoo.

You will definitely see an unhappy animal, if you visit the Polar bear. It's one thing to pace, it's another to pace backwards.

We went on a misty day, and the rest of the zoo was okay. Fortunately, the kids loved it.
