The atmosphere was beautiful, peaceful and quiet. No matter what direction you turned, there was a beautiful picture to capture. I highly recommend that everyone visits this place when they are in Portland.

I live in Japan and have had the chance to visit some beautiful gardens and parks here. I met up with family members from California in Portland. They wanted to see the Portland Japanese Garden and I went with a bit of trepidation - would it be over-the-top, more Japanese than Japan's? I was very pleasantly surprised to find a serene garden that has the same kind of subtle beauty as the gardens in Japan. It is not very large, but it never felt crowded. We also enjoyed the camellia exhibition and competition in the hall; visitors were able to vote on their favorites. The small souvenir shop also has a nice selection of items. I bought a set of notecards printed with my favorite Japanese irises.

its was serene and peaceful had only a short time to visit
as parking was a problem for the people who took us there they have been going for years and were upset that you had to pay for parking as the fees they pay in their rates should cover parking costs

peaceful, varied, quiet, lots of places to sit and soak in the beauty. No cell phones or food were allowed so the atmosphere remained serene, as intended. We were inspired to start our own very small, Japanese style garden at home.

Take an aimless or purposeful walk through these gardens any time of the year! You can step into the quietude right in the middle of the busy city. There is no place quite like it. There many areas to check out, so take your time, relax and enjoy.
