Smallish but reasonably accurate representation of a combination of Japanese outdoor gardens, vistas, and other iconic elements you will see if you ever visit Japan. The entrance pathway was steep and you are rewarded for your climb by many stairs. Sometimes they do have a shuttle bus that will carry you from the parking lot to the entrance. The construction elements looked authentic. Lots of water, rocks, plants etc. placed in harmonious positions - but did not see a single person of oriental background - where were they hiding?
The rather small gift shop had a reasonably good selection of objects from Japan at surprisingly good prices. Go on a non-rainy day.

I love this place. It does an amazing job of creating an island of Japanese calm in middle of downtown.

Spent an enjoyable morning in the Japanese Gardens during a recent visit to Portland. The garden is currently showing fall colors and is nestled in hillside parkland above Portland. From downtown, it takes about a leisurely 45 minutes to an hour to walk (up hill for about 20 minutes) through Portland to Rose Garden Park. After your visit, you are about 15-20 minutes away - if on foot - to Nob Hill or NW 23rd neighborhood where one can stop for a meal, visit a coffee house or go shopping. Portland is a great walking town. Public transportation and parking also nearby.

We visites the Japanese Gardens in late October during peak foilage season in Portland. The colors in the garden were spectacular! Definitely worth the time to spend a few hours at the garden if you are from out of town.
