Who would expect a rose garden in the middle of a city? Portland has it and it is beautiful. We were there in the off season and will have to return when the roses are in full bloom.

The Rose Test Garden sits upon a hill overlooking the city of Portland to the East (Mt. Hood can also be seen from there). So many different types of roses! Best time to visit is in June when the garden is in full bloom!

This garden is well maintained and ideal for a lovely Sunday afternoon walk. If you visit Japanese Garden you might as well check it out.

Don't think of this so much as a rose garden as a feast of color and scent for the eyes and nose. It's small enough that you can blast though it in an hour, but sufficiently intoxicating to spend several hours and need a break midway to refresh your jaded palette. This is a not to be missed experience for Portland.

We were so glad to see that even in October there were so many roses still in bloom. Thousands of beautiful bushes in a myriad of colors. Easy to get to by car and on a clear day the view is beautiful as well. Within walking distance of the Japanese gardens and the Holocaust Memorial.
