This has always been a good museum.. It becomes great with the historical artifacts collection of Melvin (Pete) Mark. We had the good pleasure to tour the exhibit with Pete Mark and learned of his nearly life-long pastime of collecting significant historic documents and artifacts. Consequently we saw several original documents signed by Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy. These documents are displayed in a way rivaling those in the Smithsonian. If you get a chance to see this collection--do. The artifacts are only about one-third of Mr. Mark's collection, so we can look forward to future historically significant exhibits at this world-class museum.

Definitely was not expecting this much out of this museum! The first floor is historical to all of America and contains very unique original documents as well as memorabilia from hundreds of years. Teddy Roosevelt's iconic glasses? JFK's oval office table? In Oregon?!

The second floor has all kinds of Oregonian memorabilia! Covered wagon is cool, as well as pre-Oregon Trail artifacts.

Worth the price and good way to see an overview of Oregon's history!

The displays and exhibits are fantastic. Whether you live here or it is your first visit, this place details the social and economical history of Oregon very well. We have been here three times and always walk away feeling like we know a little more about the people and their interactions with each other and the land that framed the foundation of Oregon.

Being California transplants, a trip to the museum was very enlightening. The displays are extremely well done with special attention to every detail. The difference between California and Oregon was striking in that the Indian population was so much more a part of the evolution of the State. Also, Oregon history was very much influenced by the Hudson Bay Company in its early years. Appropriate for all ages. The staff in the gift shop was very cordial and helpful.

I spent about two hours in the museum because it is so large and has a considerable number of objects to see. It did give a general overview of how Portland and Oregon were settled, but I could not really follow the chronology of the settlement of the area. The exhibits seemed to jump back and forth in time, mainly because of the way the museum was laid out, and I found this a bit confusing. The museum is laid out more like snippets of information on a number of topics instead of a continuous historical line of settlement. So it was good for what it did, but it was also confusing as to when something happened or what happened before or after something else. Still, it is worth the admission charge and the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
