“A screaming bargain.”
Reviewed December 24, 2009

Very modern, well appointed rooms, with all the normal amenities. Nothing extraordinary, could have been larger, but generally comfortable with good service. Nice bath, with large shower instead of tub. Only one complaint: in a fit of environmental correctness, they have installed the water-saver-from-hell on the sink, so it takes unreasonably long to rinse your hands or fill a water glass under the pathetic dribble from the faucet.

Conveniently located in the northern end of the CBD, between the north and south-bound MAX light rail lines. We enjoyed the hotel restaurant, which featured some clever variations on classic diner food. Both the rooms and restaurant were maybe half the price you might expect for this quality and location.

The hotel has very good location in the downtown area.
The room was clean and nice.
The staff is great. Everyone is
nice, friendly, courteous, and helpful.
Joanne deserves particular mention because she
is extremely nice and helpful and very patient to answer
all my questions and give me great advice on food,
sights, etc.
Would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed here for a saturday night alone away from the kids and instead of having a quiet night alone were instead up all night due to the bright flashing green light coming from the smoke detector above the bed, the constant noise of buses coming and going right outside, the hard uncomfortable bed, and the late night conversation of our neighbors through the paper thin walls. I was thoroughly disappointed. Not even the bar was good, the waitress was rude and the drinks were incredibly weak! Spend a little more on a room and try the Monaco, great place, incredible service!

I don’t know what this hotel looked like before, but they’ve completed an extensive overhaul to bring this place into the trendy now. Nicely done.

That said, I wouldn’t stay here again because of a lack of breakfast (despite being a Courtyard which typically provides breakfast) and being gouged on parking. Here’s the scoop: My husband and I were traveling thru with two tandem bikes – so we needed some secure parking. In advance of our visit, he called the hotel directly to ask about the parking situation. We were told point-blank that the hotel had a self-park lot that was safe and secure for our car + bikes situation. Upon arrival, this was not the case! The only parking the hotel has is valet parking under the building at a price of $20/day. We felt pretty misled as it’s generally expected that the people answering the phone for a hotel should be able to provide accurate information about something so specific.

Place looks mod, but no breakfast and no parking as promised means no return. Plenty of other good places in Portland from which to choose.

This was a combo business + birthday trip to Portland. This hotel suited our style perfectly. What impressed us most was the courteous welcoming staff. They made us feel good everytime we exited the hotel on our daily adventures and same for our return. Check in a snap, business center A+, room wi-fi a breeze, room decor: quality, contemporary, upscale, clean, quiet. View from 16 floor room, outstanding. Best location in Portland, everything within walking distance or within the boundaries of their free transportation Max system (above street metro line). A great restaurant can be accessed through their lobby. We will definitely return to this hotel for our next stay in Portland.

This is no five star hotel; it is a great hotel with simple touches supporting the saying, "less is more". Simply:

Beds were new and hotel quality.
Cleanliness of room was top notch.
The decor was up to date and Portland - Indie cool.
Staff was helpful and attentive.
The "breakfast special rate" was outstanding for the food in "The Original" was outstanding; way beyond anything expected of a hotel restaurant but superior compared to any breakfast dinner: fresh, creative, and large portions. Rumor has it the place has a killer Happy Hour.

All in all ... a fine selection.

In contrast, last month, I stayed at the Juptier and this hotel truly sucks. It only exists "as is" because most people can not look beyond the superficial veneer and face the fact: it is a crappy Travel Lodge with a new paint job.
