A fantasy—but a very real one! Upon entering Powell’s for my first time when visiting PDX, I was taken aback at its sheer size. Shelves of books occupy something like 4 floors in the building, separated by either genre or format (some items included small toys, souvenirs, etc.). It was exhausting browsing all their collections, but it was insanely satisfying. This is undoubtedly a real fantasy for all people, bookworms or not.

Wheelchair accessibility is great, staff are always eager to help find a certain title, and the vibe is just amazing. I didn’t buy anything that time, but next time...chances are pretty high! For tourists and locals alike, Powell’s Books is a non-negotiable destination to experience in Portland.

Powells is unique--a large independent bookseller with a great local vibe. The staff recommendations are great because they spotlight books you might not see on the usual bestseller lists. It is a very large store--give yourself at least an hour (I usually spend 2 hours there). They have some very cool non-book items as well. Not to be missed in a visit to Portland.

That was an amazing experience. Such a big book store I could have gotten lost. Lots of business and history books. I would definitely go again.

This bookstore must be experienced to be truly appreciated. The rare books section is an absolute treasure. More like a gallery for written word. Plan to spend some time here. One could spend their day just wandering the stacks!

Even if you’re not going to buy books, this is a cool place to check out. There are a handful of different rooms including the Pearl room which is where the rare book room is. You have to go in and check it out. It’s awesome to see. I like how the rooms are divided and grouped by interest/similar topics. There is a place to get coffee as well. You could spend a while here.
