“We can't wait to go back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2012

Powell's, how I love you! I first visited nearly 15 years ago and things have only gotten better. Helpful, numerous staff; books for every taste, easy to navigate, multiple book finding stations, cool signs, great extra things to purchase - oh, just everything one could want in a "natural" book store. I order from them online but the actual brick and mortar store is a million times better. The only improvement could be to give more direction to book location within a row because there are A LOT of books to look through on every row!

“Make sure you grab a map”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2012

This is an awesome place to spend a few hours if you are a book-lover. You WILL get lost inside so grab a map and free souvenir sticker. If you can't find your book at home, come here - they have it!

“One of a kind”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2012

Massive amounts of books. They will have just about anything you're looking for to read. I've never seen anything like it. The setting and the people make it a true slice of the Portland scene. Take a couple minutes to visit their coffee shop. Excellent coffee and great baristas.

“A book store almost a square block big”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

If you are a reader, or a book lover, this is the place for you. Many of their used books are less than $6. I imagine that Powell's has any type of book one might need, They even have a whole separate building for some of their technical books. It is a clean, modern, environment. Unlike some used book stores, it does not smell like a basement, but is clean and pleasant, well-lit and user-friendly. They also offer new books as well as the typical "gifty" items you might find in a Barnes and Noble, such as bags, posters, journals, book lights, etc. These are definitely not less expensive here than they would be anywhere else.
We were there on a Saturday, and they were offering story time for children in their children's section ( a nice touch).
If you want an even more eclectic book store and don't mind one that is less pleasant and maybe a little smelly, try King's books in Detroit. I believe King's probably has almost as much as Powell's, however it has not become a destination like Powell's has. But if you are in the Portland area, stop in Powell's and then go down the street four blocks or so and get a Voodoo doughnut. Then, get out of Portland traffic and go to the Columbia River Gorge.

“Best book store ever.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

the best book store ever! my 7 Yrs old daughter found this book store in the review as the best place. once we got there, it looked old and unattractive. we almost walked away. luckily, we decided to get in and found that there Are many buildings adjacent to each other. the book store is really big and importantly really good. The selection is not Commercial, easy to find and encourage to teach kids to learn about value of money by selecting used book. We went back few times... And still miss the store. You will regret if u miss this place.
