Reviewed September 12, 2013

I love it here, the rooms are spacious, and the pool/hot tub area is amazing !. DOGS are WELCOME. The rooms facing pool, and river are the best in my opinion, and are very affordable. Great lounge which is always busy on the weekend evening, with live music. All the food I have ever had from the resturaunt has been great ! Like a large fish and chip dinner with caper remoulade for $12.00. I live only a few miles away in Portland, but stay at the Red Lion here, because it really feels like a getaway ! The place is huge, and awesome, really great views.

Room Tip: Pool side rooms. The 4th floor is terrific !!

I recently stayed at the Red Lion for a convention planning meeting. The staff are wonderful and very eager to provide good service. The meeting rooms are very nice. Only downside is that there are not very many elevators and the rooms are spread out on 4 floors so we know we will get lots of walking in to break up the long times when we will be sitting in meetings.

Green Features: I am very pleased to see that this is a "green" hotel. Lots of places to deposit your glass, plastic and paper products.

We stayed there three days for our boys basketball tournament in the Vancouver area. Location worked out well for us as it was easy access to I5 and Vanocouver. Front desk staff made some errors with my reservation and questioned what we had as part of booking a large block. I had to provide email documentation from management to prove what I was suppose to get in our room block. Not too professional. Restaurant staff was wonderful as we had Sunday brunch and the food was excellent. The other side of Janzen Island is a little sketchy with several transient types. Looks like the area is on the upswing with several new shopping options. Would stay again.

Have stayed here several times to visit the Portland area and have always enjoyed the stay. This is a resort style hotel, not a cookie cutter chain facility. Great location on the river, convenient to my destinations in Portland. This is not a new hotel but rooms are clean and comfortable, generously sized and well equipped. Bed comfort is excellent. Restaurant service and food quality are great. I always look forward to having pancakes for breakfast there; for some reason, they are particularly tasty. The only issue I had was the volume on certain channels on the TV did not work (did not bother asking for a repair of that). Used my iPad to watch videos via the free WiFi instead. We will return here whenever we need to travel to Portland.

Pros: extremely courteous and helpful hotel staff / large and spacious rooms / views of the river are spectacular / walking distance is a Taco Bell, Burger King & ATM (Wells Fargo) / gas station nearby to fill up before returning car rental / got a view of the pool and river / morning papers (US Today & Oregonian) in lobby / a short drive is the shopping complex with most box stores and fast foods (McDonalds, Dennys, Starbucks, etc.) / great bar at Sanford's / contrary to reviews I read, there are elevators but were difficult to find at first
Hmnn - minimal drawer space for a room with two queens (30) / few clothes hangers (8) / weak water pressure (not sure if hotel specific or the general area) / airplane noise but most hotels in the area also have it / being on the first floor - not much privacy since the pool has active use from early morning till night (need to keep drapes closed) should request a 2nd floor / bar is so - so, kinda a sterile with older patrons so spent more time at Sanford's down the street and made great friends with the bartender and waitresses
Cons - work day traffic is horrific / do not stay in this hotel if plan to return to the hotel via Portland City or surrounding areas anytime between 3:00 p.m. and 67:00 p.m. You need to take the I-5 North to get to hotel and the traffic is soooo bad, I can walk quicker than driving. It took me 45 minutes to travel 3 miles!!!! / Hallway noise can be disturbing. I was awaken several times each night by intoxicated hotel guests in the hall

Leaving hotel tomorrow so I may update this review.

Despite the cleanliness of the rooms, absolutely horrible customer service!

1. Shuttle from the airport took about 1 hour to get us.

2. One of the two keycards issued did not work in the door. When I went up to the desk to get it fixed, found 2-3 other persons having the same issue!

3. We had the privacy sign up with cash and valuables laying around the room, only to find the cleaning crew had decided to come-in anyways!

4. When you need to talk to the front desk or have a question, very long lines. To call, have to get transferred by the operator, does not directly connect, I mean seriously?

5. They utilize a poor quality cab company that they have a financial arrangement with. We decided to avoid the problem (see #1) of the "free" airport shuttle by ordering a cab. After waiting 25 minutes, it never came. When another guest of the hotel was returning with a different cab company - we hijacked their cab. The cab driver laughed when we told him the name of the competing cab company that never showed, "they (Red Lion) uses _____ cab company!?! good luck getting anywhere"

Apparently this hotel does not value its guests or their time and needs some serious training of staff. It's not worth it, stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: good luck, I guess try for 2nd floor - feels more secure than the "garden" level
