Description: Urban Farmer redefines the modern steakhouse with an emphasis on Northwest, sustainable ingredients and simple, straightforward preparations within a farmer chic environment. The menu honors national and local culinary traditions sourcing ingredients from some of the Northwest’s finest eco-friendly producers like Sudan Farms, Wooden Bridge, Nicky Farms, and Cattail Creek. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and happy hour, Urban Farmer remains a reliable and approachable destination amidst Portland’s bustling food scene.Designer David Ashen of D-ASH Design in New York created a unique restaurant space within the 8th floor atrium lobby of the Nines Hotel. The space makes use of organic, reclaimed and modern materials such as a 20-foot communal table sourced from an old-growth Douglas Fir. The spacious “Deck” captures the light-hearted feel of outdoor dining and is accented by a field of wheat grass in the center of the room. A video installation by one of Portland’s favorite experimental artists, Matt McCormick, rolls stunning images of the city’s rural and urban landscapes. The “Pantry” offers an intimate setting with walls of steel and reclaimed timber, as well as shelves stacked with vibrant jars of pickled fruits and vegetables. The Library , adjacent to Urban Farmer in the lobby, is the ideal venue for guests to host private parties, play a game of pool or enjoy a quiet cocktail.

“Good, efficient, pleasant, but pricey”

Nice layout and functions as internal restaurant for the Nines Hotel in downtown Portland. Have to catch elevator up to 8th floor and it's hidden behind reception. Good selection food and drink but is pricey.

“Great expense account place”
Reviewed August 14, 2014 via mobile

We went here for a business dinner which turned out great. We were seated in a private room which afforded us some privacy but which still allowed us to experience the sleek, upscale ambience.

The staff was great, particularly the events manager who made sure everything was perfect before and after the dinner. She also arranged for a seamless billing process afterward when we decided to go up to the equally impressive rooftop bar.

The dinner itself was excellent, very expensive but high quality. Most of the party of 15 started with the tomato and manchego cheese salad, their take on the more common tomato and mozzarella salad. The tomatoes, herbs and dressing were amazingly fresh and flavorful, although the manchego was bland and added nothing to the flavor. The bread which comes with the meal is tasty, especially the cornbread.

Most of us had one of the many varieties of steak on the menu. Most of the cuts are very large, in the range of 14 to 24 ounces, which drives up the price. However, everyone raved about the flavor and agreed the quality was outstanding.

Of course, like most high end steakhouses, everything is a la carte, so we ordered a number of side dishes for the table. These included sauteed mushrooms, which were excellent, creamed corn, which was a tad too sweet, and several potato dishes. All were very good, although the portions, unlike the meat, were smaller than you typically see for sides.

Thoroughly full, we all skipped dessert and headed upstairs to the roof for a nightcap. High quality food, great atmosphere and service, but bring your wallet!

“Delicious restaurant..pretty expensive!”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Although our experience dining at Urban Farmer was lovely. We were in a bit of sticker shock over the cost of items on the menu. The food was delicious! My husband and I split a steak, a salad, a side dish and a dessert. We took one of our own wines and the corkage fee was $20 which is standard for a high end restaurant. I had a glass of sparkling wine and my husband had a martini. The bill was close to $150.00! Seemed like a lot when we split everything but, the experience was terrific. The staff is amazing. Very attentive, prompt, friendly, courteous, and timely. The rib eye steak was delicious! We ordered it medium rare PLUS, it came out rare! Too rare for me and even my husband who always orders rare. But, the flavor was extraordinary. I turned the blue side away from me : ). Just a thought to keep in mind when you order. The caesar salad was great, as well as the side, and the dessert was excellent. Everyone at our table was very pleased with their meals. It is a special treat for yourself to dine here.

“Too costly for the experience”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

The food and service were very good, but I did not find the value. It was a bit too expensive for what you received. Much better value at restaurants steps away from the hotel.

“Perfectly cooked steak and great cocktails”
Reviewed August 10, 2014 via mobile

We really enjoyed the steak here. The specialty cocktails: farmer #3 and the Pepino Fresco were awesome. The decor has a sleek modern feel which we liked. Watch out for the rocks on the wall though. I cut myself on them when we got seated.
