We kicked off our PacNW trip in Portland and stayed at the Benson for 3 nights. We got a pretty good value through tripadvisor and were overall happy with the acommodations. The hotel interior does have the appearance of a historic hotel with a grand lobby and smallish rooms. Yes, the TVs are not flat screen, the bathrooms & furniture a little outdated...but our room was very clean, the bed very comfy, & the staff friendly & accomodating. The location was perfect, you're within walking distance of Washington Park, Old Town, Pearl district, Pioneer Square. We even walked to the Portland Art Museum (~15 minutes). We loved Portland.

Pros: Good, central location. Close to Chinatown, Pearl District and easy walk to all downtown destinations and public transportation. Room service was quick though expensive.
Cons: Even my 5 year old noticed the strange musty smell every time we entered the hotel. The hotel is desperately in need of renovation. The rooms are small, drab and not at all charming. The upholstery on the chair was stained, the bedspread needed a good cleaning as did the carpet. We found silverfish and small black insects in the room a couple of times. The bathrooms haven't been updated since the 80's it seems. The tiles in the bathroom were dingey and mildewed. The room in general was stuffy. At night we kept the windows open to let fresh air in but that let the downtown noise in, making it hard to sleep. The restaurant was supposed to be very good but my eggs benedict was nothing special. The hollandaise was not light and fluffy and the eggs were overcooked. None of the restaurants in the hotel are reasonably priced to grab the kids a bite to eat.
Hopefully they will soon recover the old world charm of this hotel by making some critical upgrades soon. Until then, stay elsewhere.

I booked this hotel through priceline. I placed a bid for a 4 star hotel, and let me tell you this place is definitely not four stars! Do not be deceieved by the lobby--sure it looks grand and elegant, but wait until you get to the rooms themselves. I was extremely disappointed and felt that priceline was not fair in it's rating system. The rooms were old and outdated. Carpets/chairs and sofas were dirty and stained. There were mildew stains on our tub mat. Everything was just very old and outdated, and it very dingy and dirty. To be fair I spoke with the hotel manager and told her of my experience. She did tell me that they were going to do a makeover in the next 6-12 months. If you really are dying to stay in this area, try it in a year or so, otherwise go spend your money elsewhere

Very nice older hotel. There is enough age to give it character and charm but enough updates to keep it clean and kept up. The wood in the lobby is beautiful. The bed was very comfortable. We got an excellent rate via priceline.

We booked this hotel through Priceline and it is 4 star quality with a great price. The rooms we great, clean with all the extras you expect at the higher priced hotels. This is a great location to everything downtown Portland. You won't need a car if you don't leave the city because you will have lot's of choices. We did have a car and parking in the city is high at $29 but you can also reduce that at other parking ramps, weekend was $11. Staff was helpful. My biggest complaint is that the lobby coffee is gone by 8AM! Lots of Starbucks if you get up late. It may not be the best 4 star but my family was more that satisfied and I would stay here again. Portland people are the nicest people we have met and we are nice here in Wisconsin.
