“Fallen From Grace; Disappointed...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2013

I spend 100+ nights per year in hotel rooms and travel to Portland regularly. Considering the expense, past excellent service levels and history of the Benson; this experience was average at best...

Regardless of basic upgrades in rooms; entire property is overdue for a refit/updating. This includes the staff, rooms, corridors and all public areas.
Scratched/worn walls, doors and floors; dark decor, broken down furniture and burnt out lights.
Unless sitting at the bar, good luck in getting service at a table or lobby area. Small/dirty/smelly bathrooms for bar and restaurant.
Parking valets don't answer phone and take way too long to return car.
Twice with luggage inhand and no one to help or open door. Entire property seems under staffed.
With the exception of check-in was never acknowleged by front desk or any employee within the hotel (exception being the bar tender).
Unless you get an amazing rate thru an online travel site' would never recommend. 3 star hotel; nothing more...

We stayed here on New Year's Eve because we wanted a nice hotel that was close to the action downtown. We were able to get an early check-in, which was nice because my flight into Portland was earlier in the day. Food and drinks at the Palm Court are reasonably priced and delicious. They were able to hold our luggage for us the next day while we walked around downtown Portland. Overall the room was excellent, no problems there, but what really stood out during our stay was the great customer service!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a view, not all rooms have good ones.

We stayed at the Benson Hotel for their New Years Eve package. Besides creating a wonderful experience for New Years Eve, the hotel is exquisite! Upon entering the lobby you feel you stepped back in time to how the elite lived and wanted to stay. The wood carvings, stain glass, check in, and staff was divine. There is a wonderful lobby bar where you are welcomed, and the beverages delicious. The restaurants are beautifully decorated and the food was very tasty. We had a king deluxe room on the corner with windows on two sides, it looked directly up Broadway street (rm 933). The bed was very comfortable. The room was a very good size, large and roomy. Although, the bathroom was a bit small, it was ample and all amenities we supplied. The Benson is right in the heart of beautiful Portland. Walking distance to everything. The staff was so helpful, friendly, out-going, and very knowledgeable. We are so lucky to have a classic hotel in Portland that gives you everything you would want to ask for.

Room Tip: Be sure to eat at the restaurant El Gaucho. Expensive, but oh, so good! And the corner rooms are t...

As many other reviewers, we had a great experience at this lovely hotel. We were travelling by train and the Benson is an easy walk from the train station. Beautiful stately hotel, nice room, excellent food (at least breakfast and lunch) in the lobby restaurant, too. Professional and courteous service from the staff. Well located in the downtown core for a few days of sightseeing in Portland. What else could you want?

The Benson is one of Portland's grand old hotels, well grand for Portland, good for fuddy dudies such as we. It is still in good shape. The rooms are fair sized and not expensive, and have Tempurpedic beds. The bathroom was a bit old-style but quite functional. The lobby was all decked out for Christmas. The wireless was not the best, but otherwise the infrastructure worked well. With the demise of the Governor, we now stick with the Benson.

Thoroughly Enjoyed The Benson Hotel & professional, caring staff. We stayed there twice in Nov 2012, 3 nights to start our vacation & then returned 2 more nights after we visited Cannon Beach & Cascade Locks & Multnomah Falls. Large lobby is classy & elegant. Concierge & Bellmen are very helpful. Breakfast special is outstanding. Stayed on 12th floor. Enjoyed the most comfortable classic temperpedic bed. Benson Hotel location is excellent with Portland City Grill on corner for dining on 30th Floor. Skip the weekend wine reception; only one wine choice offered. Summary: We Miss The Benson.

Room Tip: Higher floor is relaxing, has less street noise.

I invited my husband out for his birthday and we stayed in a Benson Hotel junior suite. It was so comfortable. The best night sleep ever. The staff was quick to respond to our requests. Everyone was very courteous. I wish I had booked a longer stay.

Room Tip: The bed was extremely comfortable. The pillows created the perfect level of luxury. There was a good...
