I stayed at the Silver Cloud in July during a weekend trip to Portland with a friend who had never visited and wanted to check out the great dining and tax free shopping. The Silver Cloud was an affordable and convenient place to stage our time in Portland.
The Silver Cloud is a chain of hotels so if you come expect bland, predictable, but very satisfactory service and accommodations. The Silver Cloud location in Portland was small, tidy, and clean, conveniently located in Northwest Portland's Nob Hill neighborhood, very close to great restaurants, cafes, and shopping. The hotel was easy to get to from the freeway, had ample covered parking, and the staff was professional and friendly, and offered us a streetmap of the neighborhood with a list of restaurants and shops. The hotel offers a free continental breakfast in a rather cramped dining and serving area, but I did not avail myself of the food...I chose this hotel because it is in a quiet, convenient location near my favorite part of Portland. It's just a few blocks' walk from the thriving commercial and dining district on 21st/23rd Avenue. The hotel is on the fringe of Nob Hill neighborhood where it meets some industrial sections, which are only a minor eyesore compared with the charming areas south and west of the hotel.
The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms clean and utilitarian, housekeeping was great. The hotel was also quiet (there was a family with small children staying immediately next door and I barely heard them at all). My only complaint is that the room had a strange smell (not unpleasant, just odd), I think it might have been a smell from the room's air conditioner. Also, if you have an urge to drink a soda from the hotel's drink machine, the cost is $1.25 for a can of diet Coke; save yourself some money and bring your own (the hotel rooms have mini-fridges). Other than that, a great place to stay if you are looking for no-frills accommodations for a good price in a fun part of town.
