Perhaps b/c I knew the De Luxe when it was still the Mallory & perhaps because as a child I would sit in the lobby and marvel at the sparkling chandeliers, I am biased, but i think the renovation of the Mallory into the DeLuxe is something of a dream come true. So rarely does it seem that Hoteliers respect the charm, architecture and history of a property. It seems that they are more concerned about making hotels 'hip and modern' that they feel no guilt or shame when stripping buildings of fine mouldings and fixtures. Not the owners here. They did a magnificent job of dusting off the cobwebs and polishing up the brass and bringing this always charming property back to life. The rooms are small - that's true - but in respect of the age of the building, it is unavoidable. While small, they are still elegantly and comfortably appointed - very comfortably. The Driftwood Lounge bar has been a watering hole for generations of Portlander's who are all relieved to find it as comfortable as always - only now without 50 years of nicotine stains! Make sure to note the architectural details - while they aren't perhaps museum quality, they are original and have been lovingly restored. I don't live in Portland any longer but I visit as often as possible and always stay at the DeLuxe.
