From the outside, the Modera is unremarkable. But once you walk in, you know someone has put some thought into making this a hotel that fits with its Portland environment. The lobby is sparse but hip. The attentive staff will immediately open the large glass doors to the outside garden if you head that way. It's hard to describe the "fire pits" outside, but they look like large planters which are lit up with cheery and warming flames at night. You can sit around them and have a glass of wine or cocktail - very comfortable in mid-October.
The rooms are small but the bed is wonderfully comfortable. I liked the red-toned close-up photo of an artichoke with water droplets on the wall (took a few minutes to figure out what it was). Especially cool from a design standpoint was the red sliding door which covered either the closet or the bathroom.
One note for "crossover season" travelers: Apparently when they remodeled the old hotel, they decided on an energy-efficient heating/cooling system that does only one at a time. It was fairly warm while we were there (mid-sixties) and we couldn't get the room, which was at 74 degrees, to cool down. We turned on what we thought was the air conditioning, but as it turned out, only blew the warm air around the room. We checked in at the front desk about this and were told that the system works well with the exception of the few crossover weeks between summer and winter and vice versa. Oh well. At this price, how can you really complain?
