We stayed at the Hotel Modera for a school visit in April of 2013. We picked the hotel because of its location near Portland State University and its high ratings in Tripadvisor. There are bus stops, the light rail (MAX) is northbound on one side of the hotel and southbound on the other side of the hotel. The buses, streetcars and MAX rail make it very easy to get around the city and you don't need to move your car. There are alot of restaurants shopping , food carts and things to see nearby the hotel as well. Remember this is a downtown and the city blocks are very short so if you like to walk things are not as far as you think.
The Hotel lobby is very nice and comfortable. The check in personnel were great and helpful whenever we had a question about the town. Check in was fast. Note, the elevator requires the use of your room key so make sure you have it if you go down to the lobby. Parking was valet only and was $27 per night but there is unlimited in and out privileges and the valets were always timely and courteous. They even doubled as doormen.
We did not eat in the restaurant but it always seemed busy in the evening. It was very nice with a great courtyard sitting area with 3-4 fire pits that were activated every night. A large number of lounges and tables were in the courtyard. Note: Ice was in bags by the elevator and ice buckets were there as well in cabinets. Newspaper was at our door every morning.
We had a dual queen on the 2nd floor facing 5th street. The room was a decent size and the bathroom appeared to have all new fixtures - very modern and contemporary. The only weird thing was the closet door doubled as the bathroom door. Kind of strange and it did not close all the way. HD channels and free wifi was nice. Room was always cleaned timely and was very comfortable. Suggestion is to get a higher room and face either the courtyard side or 6th street. The second floor facing 5th street - where we were was very noisy into the night and early in the morning with the sound of buses.
We saw alot of the other hotels listed here in Tripadvisor for Portland but this location was probably the best.
On our next visit we will definitely stay here again.
