We booked in with some trepidation, as we weren't sure that a hotel this close to the city centre would be quiet, but it turned out there was no need to worry. Although roadworks were going on almost next to the parking lot, we weren't disturbed (they didn't start too early, and work ended late afternoon). Maybe because of the roadworks there was very little traffic passing in front of the hotel, and we didn't hear any noise from the parking lot or from other rooms.

Our room was spacious and comfortable -- king bed with good mattress and pillows, a table and chairs, microwave, bigger-than-average fridge, TV with decent selection of channels, and a strong wifi connection. Good water pressure and lots of hot water in the bathroom. The room couldn't have been cleaner, and the bedspread and carpet looked new. Everything, in fact, was way above what you might expect from a budget hotel chain.

The manager (maybe he's also the owner) was very helpful in explaining the transit system and which routes go where. If you're planning to visit downtown Portland, give yourself a stress-free day by leaving your car in the parking lot (no charge, unlike at many area hotels). Take a five-minute walk around the Rose Quarter to the transit point where you can pick up a train over the steel bridge into town. This route is part of the free zone, where there's no charge to use public transit. There are lots of interesting places to get to on foot: the Pearl District (tasty and imaginative lunch at Park Kitchens), Whole Foods (including great deli) and the immense Powell's Books. We later took a train up to 21st Street, where there are all kinds of restaurant options. We were very pleased with our dinner at Ind Ish, a chic eatery serving delicious north Indian cuisine tapas style (the portions are more generous than at many tapas restaurants). You can get a train from that area directly back to the Rose Quarter stop near the hotel.

The hotel is not located in the most prosperous part of Portland, but it felt perfectly safe. We had absolutely no concerns about walking around, even at night, and we had no worries about leaving our car in the parking lot. If you decide to stay there, it may be worthwhile phoning and asking if roadworks are still going on, because if they are, detours and diversions may make it tricky to find the place. However, the front desk can give you instructions. This is not the only part of town affected by road and bridge construction, btw. It seemed widespread in July.

The Econo Lodge Convention Center is clean and convenient. We could walk to the Rose Garden. Parking is free and the staff is very friendly and helpful. There is a refrigerator and coffee maker in the room. There is no ironing board or hair dryer in room, but the front desk brought them up right away when we requested them. The manager keeps and eye out on the property so it felt safe.
