Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland

Certificate of Excellence

From arrival to departure, Hotel Monaco does a superb job of ensuring your comfort and allowing you to relax and enjoy Portland. The staff members are informed about their city, the location is simply perfect for convenience, the wine hour in the great room is civlised and lovely and the rooms are quiet, comfortable and for the most part well-appointed. The only criticism is that slightly better lighting in the room would be welcomed. On all other counts - excellent value! I have stayed there twice now and would definitely return.

Lovely and comfortable with friendly and helpful service.
Expensive parking. Required to register with Kimpton organization to use the wifi which was inconvenient and intrusive (an email address required).

My husband and I arrived on the overnight Amtrak train from San Francisco. Wonderful because we had a cabin, bunk beds were ready when we boarded the train. On our arrival in Portland we walked for about 15 minutes pulling our suitcases to Hotel Monaco. It is easy, a flat walk in the early morning.
Checkin was efficient, very polite staff and we went to discover our corner room. It was huge. There was a mini bar but another empty mini bar was provided to put your own supplies! Wow! The bathroom was huge and toiletry supplies were plentiful. The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in in a hotel. We travel a lot and will now always look for Kimpton hotels wherever we travel! We had a delightful seven nights in Portland.

We had booked a tour of the Leatherman factory but not knowing exactly how to reach it! The front desk staff checked the details for using the excellent public transport system and printed off the instructions for us. It was necessary to use a tram/train then connect with a bus. Easy. The bus driver created a new stop to drop us off at the factory street, rather than going to the official stop on the next block, then made sure we knew where to walk.

Whenever we returned to the hotel, the doorman and front desk staff greeted us, opened doors and made us feel as if we were "home." The nightly manager's reception was excellent. Music on the grand piano in the longue provided a delightful setting for partaking of a local wine, beer AND they catered for non alcoholic drinkers. Good conversation with fellow travellers provided the feet with a well earnt rest.

We ate "on the streets". Within a couple of blocks of the hotel there are street vendors selling excellent Indian, Mexican etc food from permanent kiosks. Many workers from the offices eat there at lunch time and the kiosks close by about 5 o'clock or when they have run out of food! Good food sells well!
Portland is a very friendly city and when we return it will be to Hotel Monaco, a Kimpton Hotel. If you join their loyalty program you get free interent in your room.

This is a most amazing hotel in a prime location. We had a very well appointed king suite on the 7th floor which was amazing - lots of space and a very comfortable bed. The public spaces are also lovely, especially the ornate lobby/living room where we enjoyed complimentary evening wine tastings and morning coffee. The staff were wonderful, and we had wonderful assistance from the concierge when were were
planning our own walking tour of the city.

I booked directly through the hotel, not a discount site, since they had some good deals.

I highly recommend Hotel Monaco, and now that I know about Kimpton hotels I will be looking for them when I visit other U.S. cities.

I stayed here with my husband as part of our first year anniversary road trip. I cannot say enough about how great the staff are here, so friendly and helpful. Also they took care to congratulate us on our anniversary at every contact with the front desk. Although we didn't get a chance to take part in the wine/beer hour in the lobby, it did look very social. The room was beautiful and i recommend this hotel to anybody!! Thank you Hotel Monaco :)

Everyone at the hotel is very friendly and helpful. I joined the guest loyalty program before traveling and was upgraded upon arrival to a suite. A lot of room for one person but it was nice. I travel with my computer and appreciated the free wi-fi set up.

In the morning, I received my free WSJ and received a card for two free snacks (part of the loyalty program perks)

The hotel is very convenient. About 2 blocks from the light rail. When you arrive at the airport - hop on the light rail. Tickets are $2.30 and it takes about 35 minutes.- hop off at Pioneer Place and walk two blocks to the hotel.

Every evening the hotel has a free wine and beer tasting from 5-6PM along with someone playing the piano.

For Breakfast stop at Mothers - just a few blocks away. The place is packed but it is a large restaurant and the wait is usually short. If you have time stop and visit the Chinese Garden. And if you like craft markets they have a huge one every Saturday and Sunday.

The hotel is pet friendly (I think the pets are all on one floor). I must admit that the pets were the best behaved animals I have ever encountered. Their was no barking and they were very respectful the surroundings. They even provide pet massages.

If you want a pet while you are at the hotel you can request a goldfish in a bow. Mine was named Sushi.

The hotel is a fun place to stay. Also if you are taking a wine tour, I would recommend Jeff with EcoTours. Reasonable and you will get to visit some great wineries.
