I have stayed at other Kimpton properties and expected better service. Checking in was a joke, no one seemed to want to work that night. No doorman, bell or front desk at 9:30 p.m., finally checked in after an employee inadvertently wandered to the front desk. Lots of street noise, but thats the city. Had shirts laundered but showed up not pressed, pressing was kind of the reason to get them laundered. Talked to front desk ..."really sorry but there is an iron in your closet". Rooms are big and fun, great property...just realize you'll get better service at Subway during lunch.

I really enjoyed my weekend stay here; I loved the eclectic decor (although probably not on a daily basis in my own home). The mixed patterns used along with the cheerful color palette were fun. We stayed in a King Suite which was spacious and could also be turned into two separate rooms (bedroom and living room) easily with pocket doors. Good quality sheets and pillows, Aveda products, decent mini-bar, and very quiet on the 10th floor. The bathroom had a lighted magnification mirror, decent hair dryer and good counter space. The shower had a double showerhead, but I would rate the pressure as only OK. The best part about the room may have been the bath robes-one was a giraffe print and the other a zebra (like I said, it's fun and cheerful). The bar/restaurant on site was nice as was the service. The location is ideal, we walked everywhere (waterfront, Saturday Market, Farmer's Market) and went to fabulous restaurants in the neighborhood.

This was bar none the best in-town hotel we have ever stayed in. I saw in town as it is hard to compare a Portland hotel to a Carribbean Island getaway! Service was first rate, staff was the friendliest, rooms immaculate. Lots of little amenities--drop off card and they will print your boarding pass, free toiletries, pet friendly but not one whiff of pet odor! i would reccommend this hotel very highly. Location couldn't be better as well.

I summary, I would have awarded the hotel 4 or perhaps 5 stars if it hadn't been for the noise during the night from construction work and the failure of the hotel to advise us of this in advance of our stay. We wouldn't have stayed there if we were aware of the noise, especially at nearly $300 a night.

We stayed at the hotel for four nights from September 25th 2008.

Our stay was one of real contrasts. The staff were the most helpful I have ever come across, the location is great for getting around central Portland and everything about the room was just right.

The downside was the noise outside the hotel due to construction works, particularly the failure of the hotel to inform us in advance of this noise nor amend their room rates to take account of this. This illustrates to me that the hotel is solely out to make money.

We were initially assigned a room on the Alder Street side of the hotel overlooking Macy's. Our sleep was disturbed at 4.30am as noise from the construction work started, which carried on until we got up the following morning. We then asked to move rooms to the other side of the hotel. This was actioned immediately my the front desk with little fuss, illustrating the hotels good points.

We then spent 2 nights with no disruptions to our sleep. However on the final night some roadwork started at around 11.30pm on the Washington Street and carried on through the night. This was the perfect preparation for our 12 hour journey back to the UK!

We were eager to stay at the Monaco, after reading the overwhelming number of enthusiastic reviews. While a nice comfortable hotel, it didn't live up to the hype. For example the decor is seriously mis-matched, to the point of distraction. While this can work if done in a funky, eclectic manner, something tells me the designer felt he or she'd achieved a classy look and feel, rather than one that feels cheap and haphazard. Most bothersome was the sense the hotel was trying to squeeze out a few extra bucks at each turn. Everywhere we looked, we saw price tags from nearly everything: from the teddy bear on the bed to the robes in the closet to the surprising find of tacky underwear hanging in the closet (had it been worn?). It felt like we were on some cheap cruise seeking to score all the extra dough they could before the next sailing. I realize I'm dwelling on the negative: in truth, the suite was large, clean and well-priced; the staff friendly; the bed comfy and the hotel well-located. Our disappointment was in having the sense that we were customers, not guests. The fact that you should be prepared to pay $2/person for the "complimentary" wine hour says it all.

Our week stay at Hotel Monaco could not have been better. My husband, adult daughter and I booked a suite with french doors separating the bedroom from the living room with pull out sofa. The funky but classy decor appealed to all of us. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom roomy. But best of all was the staff. Everyone - the valets, the doormen, the desk, even the Art, the resident dog - were "over-the-top" friendly and helpful. We were hiking and bicycling so benefited from the advice and experience all had to offer. Personal maps, guide books and experiences were offered daily. On each return from daily adventures, we were welcomed with a wine reception in the elegant lobby lounge. The restaurant, Red Star, was equally wonderful with great wait staff and exceptional food. We all agreed, the hotel was one of our all time favorites!!

We arrived a little early and the room wasn't quite ready. The doorman pointed us in the direction of a super cafe/bar where we had a bite to eat and a couple of beers whilst the room was given priority housekeeping treatment. We were upgraded to a deluxe suite on the 10th floor. Building works across the street were a bit noisy at 7am, but not the fault of the Monaco's. The Red Star restaurant was undergoing a refit when we arrived and complementary room service breakfasts were supplied. The Red Star opened on the morning of our departure and we had breakfast there. It was very good with very attentive service. We met Art, the Director of Pet relations but he was too busy with a big bone to speak with us for long. Check out was smooth and accurate and a taxi was waiting to take us on to our next appointment. A most enjoyable stay
