“Wonderful time”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

I was looking for an interesting hotel in downtown Portland that could accommodate 5-6 people in one room... and a hotel with some personality.
This was it!!
The room was very comfortable. When I made the reservation, the lady asked if I would like to have a goldfish in the room. Well, Why not!!! In hindsight, the goldfish did not hold up his end of the conversation, but we certainly enjoyed his presence. The room did have personality as did all the public areas of the hotel. I esp liked the hotel dog, Timmy.

The staff kindly provided us with enough towels and accessories for the extra showers and hair washing that was to be done. They also cheerfully told us each day how to get to our first stop of the day -- and they must do this 100 times a day, but they were still cheerful.

Each morning we wandered down to great coffee, some days we stopped in our wandering for a midday ice cream and each night we again reconvened in the lobby for a glass of wine and some local specialty, like chocolate or cheese. We met a number of interesting people while in the large lounge -- all delightful.

We had a nice surprise when the hotel put a nice bottle of wine in our room, complimentary, to go with our celebration. This went nicely with the food we had just brought back from the local Whole Foods.

Our entire vacation was done on foot. Hence the hotel was in the perfect location. Thank you

Green Features: Excellent. It is reassuring to have a hotel provide you the means to recycle.

We recently stayed 2 nights in a king suite. The hotel was very nice, clean and close to everything. This is only the second Kimpton hotel I've stayed in but will definitely return. The happy hours are a very nice touch. When we missed the first night, they gave us coupons for free drinks in their bar. We also love that the hotel is dog friendly, while we weren't traveling with our dog it was nice to see others around in the lobby. The employees are very helpful and friendly. I wrote that it was our 5 year anniversary and they included a bottle of champagne and rose petals on the bed. Very nice touch, we didn't receive this treatment from hotels on our honeymoon! The only negative we experienced was there was a weird stain on our sheets on the bottom corner of the bed. The sheets didn't appear dirty, it just looks like the stain didn't come out in the wash. We stayed at a different hotel in Portland at the beginning of our trip and regret that we didn't stay at the Monaco instead.

Green Features: This is one of the only hotels I've stayed in that will actually leave your towels if you hang them up. We try to be environmentally conscious when we travel and appreciate their efforts.

I am always a fan of Kimpton: hands down always a consistent, modern, convienient, comfortable and accomodating experience. I was at the Portland Monaco recently and was really impressed. I am always a fan of the daily Happy Hour, but here they had a great selection of local wine and beers, with a great piano and activities for kids in the lobby. I ate at the restaraunt for breakfast both days and had great food and outstanding service each time. My room was comfortable, nice sized and the bath amentities we high quality (CO Bigelow). They also offer a number of "did you forget" items that you can call down for... including an upgraded salon hair dryer, which was much appreciated.

Visited Portland for several days to find housing for my daughter who will be attending law school in the fall. As a road warrior business traveler, I am a big fan of trip advisor and as always, I check out the ratings of hotels and trip advisor ranked this hotel #1 and they are right. This hotel is amazing. Their customer service from every employee was superior. Rooms and decor were beautiful, hotel is pet friendly, their morning coffee bar included ice coffee, their evening wine socials were so much fun. I can't wait to come back to Portland again to visit because I will look forward to staying at the Hotel Monaco!

We have stayed here twice, and loved both experiences. The hotel is beautiful, as are the rooms. It is quiet, clean, and luxurious. We love that they are dog-friendly, but that doesn't mean that the rooms are stinky and second rate. We especially enjoy the happy hour wine bar every evening. The atmosphere is relaxed and it is fun to visit with other travelers. Can't wait to go back!

Most of the time when I travel, I stay at Marriott Courtyards, not even Marriotts. So when I was able to book a stay here with my family through a generous discount which my daughter's company negotiated, I was excited. I'd heard from a friend about this place. Overall, a fabulous stay. Comfortable rooms, pretty quiet... plenty of amenities including bathrobes, soaps & shampoos galore, free coffee and muffins in the morning (for a limited time,) free wine in the afternoon (again, limited,) free New York Times -- even on Sunday. We arrived too late one night for a meal out; room service was prompt and a decent value. The place is dog friendly, though we didn't bring ours... staff very friendly and helpful... $38 valet parking, but a couple of Portland lots nearby were much much cheaper (self park, $5 on weekend days.) The room decor puts together patterns you'd never try in "real life," but somehow they work.
Tip: Join Kimpton's frequent guest club online, it's free, and entitles you to $10 off your minibar for your stay, and free wifi (not sure if they charge otherwise.) At $5 for a liter of bottled water, the $10 credit is welcome.

Room Tip: Elevator bells are loud, ask for a room down the hall.

I stayed here with friends for two nights. The desk and valet staff were very nice and helpful. The rooms smelled a bit musty, but otherwise were very nice. The lobby sitting area is gorgeous. We asked housekeeping to come back in a half hour to clean the room Saturday morning, but when we returned late Saturday night, they had not cleaned the room. You really can't beat the downtown location they have!
