“My yearly "home away from home"!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2008

I have stayed here for a week each year for nearly 5 years(usually in the fall around October) for an art retreat. The hotel goes out of it's way to make us feel welcome, and we love it there! Our group has grown from bearly over 100 to well over 300 people now, though not all stay at the hotel; but only attend classes and meals there. We've now even overflowed into a couple of neighboring hotels, but I wouldn't stay anywhere else than the Embassy! The rooms are nicely appointed and quite spacious, with a refrigerator and microwave in each. There is a bedroom, plus a living room with a hideabed and a table and chairs; and a TV in both the bedroom and the living room. Honestly, this is not a quiet location, because the airport is RIGHT THERE next to the hotel; but it is easy access to freeways and one of the Max rapid transit lines. The hotel has a lovely atrium, a manager's cocktail hour, and breakfast is included in the room price....with even omelets made to order, along with a nice variety of breakfast items. I haven't eaten in their restaurant alot for other meals; but I have ordered room service, and the food was very good. There is also an exercise room, an indoor pool (quite shallow), and a jacuzzi. All in all, I think this is an excellent choice, and I'd stay here anytime!

  • Liked — Location...our event was being held at the hotel.
  • Disliked — Location...the airport is right next door, so noise is an issue.

This Embassy Suites hotel has an upmarket attitude that doesn't quite reflect the quality on offer. It is in a good location adjoining the Airport, but its not possible to walk between the two. The hotel operates a shuttle bus on-demand and the Airport is well connected to the city by the TriMet MAX metro.

The room was very spacious and, being a suite, has a lounge area with kitchenette/microwave and a separate bedroom. It was well equipped and comfortable.

The breakfast was comprehensive, although it was slightly over-whelmed by the number of guests. In the same way, the restaurant in the evening could not cope with the number of diners and I was given a very poor table tucked behind a pillar, with rushed and unfriendly service. The hotel's location means that there are no alternative dining options without transport.

We stayed the weekend of 8/29 plus a 1 night stay the following Friday. Check-in fast, Room spotless and quiet, breakfast in the morning was fantastic. We traveled the week around the state of oregon and stayed at various hotels and this Embassy Suites was the best!!!!

The tone of our stay was set from the first seconds, when our van pulled up outside the front door. No one appeared with a luggage cart. "Ah well," I thought, "not all hotels have porters." So I wandered inside and found four (4) hotel employees with carts, hanging around having a chat. Guests? Who needs to bother with guests?

The room was not particularly clean - my wife found a slipper by the window that had been left by a previous guest - but it was reasonably quiet, given the jets whistling by outside as they came into land. We used the sofa-bed in the separate room nearer the door, which looks over the inner atrium, and that was much worse. There is a large, loud artificial waterfall on the ground floor that stays on all night, so bizarrely, the bed furthest away from the runway is the noisiest one in the room.

We made the mistake of eating in the supposedly good restaurant on the ground floor. The food was indifferent and the lowlight of our dining experience was when the waiter arrived with our main courses while we were still eating the starters - and just plunked down the plates on the table before walking away. I haven't seen this kind of service since my days in the former Soviet Union.

In short - avoid this hotel. I certainly won't be returning.

We wanted to stay close to the airport (PDX) due to an early flight. This was the loudest hotel I have ever stayed in the walls were thin and the doors of the rooms closed so loudly. Also the air conditioning was totally inadequate.
It must have been close to 80 degrees in the room.

  • Liked — close to airport
  • Disliked — too loud, too hot

We were here for one night to begin our trip and liked it so much we rebooked for two nights at the end of a family vacation. Check in was quick and efficient and we were given a room on the 7th floor as my Hilton Profile requests an upper floor. The Manager's reception was wonderful on Saturday when we arrived with hot and cold appetizers as well as drinks provided. Our room was large and comfortable as most ES with a nice pool and exercise room. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was good, but not inexpensive. When we returned on Sunday 8 days later, checkin was similiar and they were very helpful in guiding us to various sites we were interested in. The Manager's reception on Sunday and Monday were more typical and simply offered cold snacks and drinks, but a very pleasant attitude from evryone involved. A manager came through several times and asked if there was anything else we needed. The shuttle service to and from the airport were great and prompt. This hotel is not as quiet as one away from an airport, but it was quiet compared to most that are so close. I would stay here again if we were back in Portland.

Some of the other reviews commented that the hotel was surprisingly quiet. And given that the hotel is situated between two active runways, yes it is quieter than one would expect. But it does get noise.

Planes coming in for a landing are pretty quiet, it's the ones taking off that you hear. It's a distant rumble that during the daytime is no big deal. And there weren't many, if any, taking off late at night. It's the morning flights, starting at about 6am, that were bothersome.

If you're a heavy sleeper or you typically wake up by 6am, then it will be a non-issue. But if you're a light sleeper and want to sleep past 6am, get a room facing away from the airport. Or wear earplugs. Or sleep on the fold out sofa so that the lobby waterfall disguises some of the outside noise.

Other than that, the hotel was great. Well, except the oatmeal. It was really, really thick, didn't taste as good as the oatmeal at other Embassy Suites hotels.
