“A French Bistro on the South Oregon Coast? OUI OUI !!!!!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2012

We were looking for something better than the usual small coastal town burgers and deep fried everything. Little did we expect to find a gem like Paula's Bistro. We received a warm friendly welcome on a chilly February night. Service was very attentive. We explained that one of us was allergic to gluten and were told most of the menu was gluten free as they did not use roux's in their sauces.

The menu was small but well thought out, focused on what is best described as rustic French bistro. Dinners ranged from just under $18 to $26 and included soup, salad, and entree. I had the duck breast in a red cherry reduction and my spouse had a casoulet with sausage, pork rib, and duck leg with white beans. Duck breast was very good and the casoulet was to die for! Ingredients were fresh and flavorful. This comes from having a small menu where the focus is doing a few things really well rather than 8 pages of mediocre entrees.

Wine by the glass was reasonable at $7 for a healthy pour. For dessert we shared the flourless decadent chocolate cake. It was bedded in a creamy sauce with two different decorative fruit sauces. it was beautiful to look at and even better to eat.

“Delicious French Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2012

Paula and Christophe sure know how to cook! Christophe, originally from France, brings an authentic flair to this surprising hide-away in the little town of Port Orford. From their appetizers to their desserts, everything is delicious, even the butter. Pricey, but magnifique!

“A wonderful culinary experience”

On the way back to Los Angeles, from Oregon we decided to stop and take a break at Port Orford. it was becoming dark and we had second thoughts regarding continuing to drive at night time. We decided to find a place to eat and by chance some one referred us to Paula's Bistro. We were starving, not expecting much we entered and immediately realized how lucky we were.
The food was fresh and utterly delicious, the atmosphere delightful and the service wonderful.
We befriended a group of local people that came that night to celebrate and although this happened 5 years ago, this experience is still unforgettable for me.

“A uniquely delicious experience.”

My husband and I decided to try Paula's based on other trip advisor ratings and we were not disappointed. We arrived at 5pm and were a little skeptical based on the decor and that we were the only ones in the restaurant. Yes, the decor is rather funky, but what do you expect in a town of less than 1200 people. The atmosphere was very friendly and as we sat waiting for our food we joined the owners Paula and Christoff in singing along with the eclectic music selection. Paula helped us select the perfect meals. Pasta and prawns for me and salmon for my husband.
Around 6pm the locals started showing up. We observed each person coming into the restaurant was given a big hug and some were met with their favorite drinks. Everyone was chatting with each other as if we were all at a private dinner party. Yes, even us out of towners were included.
Our perfect meal started out with a simply divine basil and white bean soup accompanied with fresh baked bread, then a small salad. The main course arrived and my husband's salmon was cooked to perfection with a light sauce. My pasta and prawns had a lovely cream sauce full of flavor. We finished with a melt in your mouth french cake, with blackberries incorporated into the chocolate cake it is a must have on the menu.
When it was time to go Paula came out from behind the bar to give us a handshake, but I said I wanted to give her a hug. She wrapped her arms around me like I was a good friend and we thanked her for a truly wonderful evening. If you are looking for a cooky cutter dining experience then Paula's is not for you. If you can embrace a unique place with a social atmosphere and delicious food then Paula's is your spot.
