“Easy Access to a Great View and a Great Walking Beach”
Reviewed April 23, 2014

About as quick as it gets . . . a few feet off Highway 101 at the south entrance to Port Orford, Oregon. A parking lot, a historical sign, the old prop from a ship wreck, restrooms and a visitor's center that is usually open. And a good restaurant overlooking the view. The beach is excellent for walkers and photographers but those on a tight schedule can enjoy and photograph the view from the parking lot and then be quickly on the road without any fuss. Historical Battle Rock itself is immediately below the parking lot and has a tunnel thru it for the beach walkers. The beach also is popular with surfers, a good place for beginning surfers to practice. And about half a mile down the beach the bigger waves attract more experienced surfers. The grassy area next to the parking lot offers a place to relax or have a picnic. And there is an interpretive/information circle at the east end of the parking lot next to the information center.

“Clash of Cultures”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

The plaque & signs give a good account of the history of Port Orford. All I can say is the 9 men dropped off there were extremely brave (or maybe foolhardy) to last for 2 weeks of hostile action and as it happened the locals ended up the losers in the long run. Well worth the break on the coast highway trip.

“Sad tale must be told”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

There are a couple of signs here that tell what occurred at this place. There was 9 day battle after which the white settlers started taking over, followed years later by a rounding up of 1200 native Americans that were loaded into boxes and taken by steamship to a reservation. They say this town was cursed to never grown over 1200, which it hasn't.

“Do Not Miss The Tunnel”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Use the restroom, sign the visitors book, ask directions, read the historical plaque, read all the information signs, climb the rock and walk the trails to go check out the Battle Rock Beach. BUT, whatever you do, do not miss the tunnel that goes through Battle Rock! That was our favorite! I highly recommend going through the tunnel at low tide. I charged through one time when the tide was higher and nearly got sucked right under, but it was irresistible!!! Plus I was still wearing my shoes! Oops. Have a blast.
