“Clash of Cultures”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

The plaque & signs give a good account of the history of Port Orford. All I can say is the 9 men dropped off there were extremely brave (or maybe foolhardy) to last for 2 weeks of hostile action and as it happened the locals ended up the losers in the long run. Well worth the break on the coast highway trip.

“Sad tale must be told”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

There are a couple of signs here that tell what occurred at this place. There was 9 day battle after which the white settlers started taking over, followed years later by a rounding up of 1200 native Americans that were loaded into boxes and taken by steamship to a reservation. They say this town was cursed to never grown over 1200, which it hasn't.

“Do Not Miss The Tunnel”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Use the restroom, sign the visitors book, ask directions, read the historical plaque, read all the information signs, climb the rock and walk the trails to go check out the Battle Rock Beach. BUT, whatever you do, do not miss the tunnel that goes through Battle Rock! That was our favorite! I highly recommend going through the tunnel at low tide. I charged through one time when the tide was higher and nearly got sucked right under, but it was irresistible!!! Plus I was still wearing my shoes! Oops. Have a blast.

“Small battle at a pretty location”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

The rock takes its name from a standoff between a party of potential settlers and the native americans living nearby. Captain Tichenor had the idea that he could establish a port to supply inland parts of southern Oregon. He left nine men and went off for more supplies and settlers. The locals took exception to them and attacked. They retreated with their firearms, including a small cannon, onto the rock and held off the attackers. Eventually they had to retreat north and did. Port Orford is a pretty little town though there isn't much here besides a few resturants, a few motels and a mall business district.
